Exceeding expectations

Hello from The Continental Divide.

Towing something less than 7k lbs. through the Rockies is no problem at all and the truck's capabilities continue to impress.

Anyone who tells you that you need a diesel, or a SD truck, is way out of date.

More than enough power to maintain the speed limits, even on long steep climbs, without anything close to over revving and the truck's automatic engine braking blows me away. Way beyond expectations on that.

I've fiddled with manual gear selection but honestly, for the most part, set the cruise and let the truck do it's job. And surprisingly, gas mileage in the mountains has been better than in the flat.

And the PPOB? The first night at a Harvest Host was really hot. Ran the Camper, as if on shore power, including Aircon for 12 hrs on ~3.5 gallons.

Yep, I’m impressed with my 24 King Ranch. Made a trip from central Alberta to British Columbia. Just shy of 1,500 kms and averaged 10.2 l/100km. That’s about 28 mpg Imperial. Haven’t filled it up since returning to see how accurate the gauge is but this way I can brag to my friends driving their GM’s etc!

Overall it was a neat experience

Grand Tetons.
Super nice, morning and eve but the sun is brutal in the afternoon. PPOB providing aircon then and the built in Hot Spot, providing signal. Tmobile's map claims coverage but they're stretching it. Oh and Ford's nav works better here too. Including Forest Service roads that the goog is lost about.

Other than when the 600ah battery bank in the camper was already somewhat discharged and or, when I let a neighboring camper plug into the A side of the PPOB, while I was running the AC on the B, the truck has cycled on and off as intended, making it the most efficient and for sure, quietest generator around.

As for Harvest Hosts, I've nothing but good things to say about them.

I planned the trip using public and private campgrounds, then the same trip, using HH. The annual subscription was paid for, by the first half of the 4K+ mile trip. Some do provide some hookups for a fee but I wouldn't count on them.

A number will come with high road noise but that is the trade off for traveling convenience. Running a roof vent fan, provided enough white noise to cover it (so far).

And as you already know, "free" or "paid for" aren't truly accurate, since you're expected to spend some at each HH's business but you're getting something other than camping fees out of it..

I don’t really keep track of the PPoB gas usage anymore, because I know it is very minimal compared to a stand alone gas generator, but a couple years ago I had my trailer plugged into my PPoB for 5 days in 100 degree heat running the AC about 18 hours a day along with the rest of the trailer and used about .2 gals per hour. This is about 1\5 of what a gas generator would use and of course the convenience and lack of noise factors make this an amazing set up. Enjoy!

Home from the trip. Exceeding Expectations, still applies.

More than 5 weeks and near 5K miles, most of it dry camping, so PPOB was used frequently, when aircon was needed.

According to the computer, avg. towing mileage was in the 8s, though a couple legs were sub 7. A couple in the lower teens. Used premium when in the mountains, 87 everywhere else. Mileage in the mountains was not just better but way better. Possibly a combo the fuel upgrade and the hybrid system, getting free charges from braking and momentum and perhaps, less wind drag than in the flats.

I am glad we upgraded the suspension on the trailer, to a cushioned equalizer (CRE3000) and added the 1000lb. SumoSprings to the rear of the truck (Greatly reduced body roll).

Trailer specs are just under 7K loaded (per Cat Scales), 30' long, 8' wide, 11'-4" tall.

Power was a non issue, even in the Rockies and the automatic engine braking, performed beautifully. However, on windy days, no white knuckling but it would get tiring, even when you get enough seat time to relax into it, knowing that most of the time, nothing was the thing to do, trusting in the anti sway hitch and the truck's built in anti sway.

In other words, with the mods mentioned, this truck / trailer combo works very well together. Even a somewhat bigger trailer would be ok but eventually, wind would be a factor.
