I’m probably one of the first guinea pigs with the 2021 Powerboost to push the envelope on ESP Premium Care, as I’m now at 87k miles. I’ve had a transmission replaced with no out of pocket (a win!), and now have the truck in at the dealer as it won’t activate 7.2k Pro Power Onboard. They’ve done extensive diagnostics, said it was good, charged me a diagnostic fee (apparently not covered by ESP unless they replace a part), and sent me on my way.

5 miles from the dealership, the error “Pro Power Onboard Service Required - please contact authorized dealer for service” pops up on the screen, so I return to dealer. Next steps are to replace a sensor that goes to the aux battery (apparently not covered by ESP), and I’m waiting to hear what other parts are required and state of coverage by ESP.

I bought ESP Premiumcare w/ $0 deductible & 1st day rental car under the assumption that all of my hybrid/electronics/Pro Power components would be covered….that clearly isn’t the case after all.

I also recently found that the rental car coverage only applies if a Ford vehicle is available at the local Enterprise. I’m told that there was a waiver on this requirement during the pandemic, but that the Ford rental requirement is back on. Given the local Enterprise hasn’t had a Ford available the last couple of times my Powerboost has been in the shop (each time, 1-1.5 weeks), I’m out of luck on the ESP rental coverage.

To boot, this vehicle spends ~ 4 weeks/year at the dealer being serviced. As my advisor said, she hasn’t seen a vehicle come in for this many service issues; 10 since I bought it brand new. Given the holes I’m starting to see in ESP, I’m strongly considering moving on. I love the mix of tech in this truck, but the service issues and incomplete extended warranty coverage have me seeking something more reliable.

Any other experiences w/ ESP Premium Care?

From my understanding, diagnostics are not covered unless they find an actual issue...

That's fine by me... I'll bring my truck in well after something has failed.

I'm sure that there are potential issues with components that are not going to be covered beyond the 5/60,000 with ESP Premium. But I purchased it for the obvious expensive components that are covered.

ESP Premium is not bumper to bumper. It's just the closest thing. And if I ONLY benefited from getting a replacement 10R80 MHT? I'd be counting the gamble a win!

However, having said all that, I'd be a bit miffed with multiple/annual visits with the service department regardless of warranty. In a total combined 6 years of Powerboost ownership I've had one visit and the 3 days they had it was 1.diagnose/2.order parts/3.repair procedure.

Knock on wood

I would be surprised if premium care doesn’t cover pretty much every sensor in the truck. Take a look at the pamphlet.

I don't think they could call it ESP if it wasn't available long past 60,000

I think it was about $1800 for 8 years 100,000? With Lighting (LED) and keys.
Something like that.
I think the same coverage is about $3400 retail

That’s the point of this thread. To raise awareness that:
A) it doesn’t covered every sensor on the truck, and
B) that rental car isn’t necessarily covered / based on availability of a Ford from the nearest Enterprise, and

looking to hear other experiences.

Appreciate that. I guess what I am saying is I would take fords own brochure for premium care and the actual contract and challenge it with the warranty person at your dealership. Rereading my documentation tonight, I still find it hard to believe a sensor associated with the 12v system isn’t covered. Total BS if they won’t cover it.

Was there any other info provided to you besides that it wasn’t covered?

Something doesn't pass the sniff test on being charged to replace a sensor unless you have a deductible.

The PremiumCare Contract is structured to cover everything except what is specifically stated as NOT covered. Note this is distinct from all other Ford ESP Plans which only cover items which are specifically listed as covered.

FYI / FWIW, attached is my 2022 ESP PremiumCare contract. In Article "7. WHAT IT NOT COVERED BY THIS AGREEMENT", I find on page 5 of 12:

t) Batteries of all types and cables, ..... [emphasis added]

IF the subject sensor is integral with the battery cable (not separately replaceable) then it would seem the exclusion is explicit and forewarned. However, IF the subject sensor is replaceable separate from the cable, I'd be having a discussion with the dealer.

Helpful and agreed. As I looked at the fine print, I see nothing about the requirements to only reimburse rental for a Ford rental vehicle… So a candid conversation with the dealer is in the cards next week.
