Ejecting USB Drive

After 3 years, I am only now fooling around with playing music stored on an USB thumbdrive. I am very accustomed to using an external USB drive on my laptop computer, and to properly remove the drive, there is an "Eject" step to go through. I expected a similar "Eject" step to remove my USB stick from my truck, but didn't see anything. Is there an Eject step, or does it not matter?
