Drop Hitch Question

Hey all,

Just bought a 2021 Powerboost FX4 and have yet to tow our TT with it - Won’t happen til Spring, sadly! In the meantime, I picked up a WDH from Harbor Freight and found that the lowest I set the ball height was about 24.5” and, when level, my trailer’s receiver sits at about 20.5”…

So, I returned it and picked up a Curt Trunnion Style WDH with a 7” drop shank that allows me to set it at the appropriate height. Here’s the hitch for reference:https://www.etrailer.com/Weight-Dis...MIld_c_v-u-wIVdQ2tBh3GBA71EAAYAiAAEgIwY_D_BwE

However, while setting it up today, I found that the long ass shank scrapes on the ground when driving out of my fairly steep driveway. This made me a little concerned about towing the TT in and out of steep gas station entrances/exits, etc.

That said, I’m curious if anyone else is running a drop hitch with a longer shank like this one (without a lifted truck) and if you have any troubles with scraping when towing.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Get a drop hitch that you can adjust it to be higher than the factory receiver.

Not unusual to need to do this. I had to use one of these with my large boat trailer.

Did you measure the hitch height of the truck with the trailer connected?

Connect the truck as is, and once the WDH properly adjusted, you can figure out if you need a drop or not.

With a 1/2 ton, it's highly unlikely you need a 7 inch drop

My HDPP with a 2 in lift and 35s only needed a 3 inch drop, non WDH

So, here's the embarrassing but honest truth of the matter... I measured the height of the ball on the back of my truck on my sloped driveway which resulted in a completely incorrect measurement. I don't know if I was tired, hungover, or just having a "slow" day. But I realized today that I didn't need that massive drop shank - A 2" drop will easily do the trick ?‍

I bought a big-ass drop WDH for my 2019 Ranger from Facebook Marketplace. It was damn near a chisel plow and the hitch height on the Ranger is HIGH. I figured out what height I wanted to bolt the hitch together at and cut off the excess from the bottom. So now it's like a 5" drop.

That exact hitch on my PowerBoost has scraped only a time or two.

Also, I would never trust a Harmful Fright hitch to tow a travel trailer. Make sure to check the weight ratings on them and I would personally subtract about 1000 pounds from it for safety. Glad to hear you decided to get a reputable hitch brand with the Curt.
