Ford F-150 Driver’s side seatback has a beer belly! Something broke inside? IMG_5380

This is the driver’s side seatback. I just noticed it today. I have noticed that the massage seat for my back has felt weak lately compared to when I first got the truck. The butt massage portion still feels the same as when new.

Here is the passenger side for comparison.

It appears that the rear part of the massage mechanism has blown out. It looks like a ball was sewn into the seatback. It still works, but is weak as I mentioned. I tried adjusting the lumbar support to the lowest setting, but the bulge doesn’t change size, even though the lumbar support “deflates.” I tried pushing it in, but it won’t budge. Any ideas as to what broke? I will be bringing the truck to the dealer in early September for an oil and filter change and inspection sticker, and I will address it with them at that time, but I’m just curious if any of the gurus here know what broke.

The same thing happened to me. Somehow the seat ventilation motor has become dislodged and has fallen down into the main section of the back seat. Unzip the back seat cover, and you’ll see how the ventilation motor attaches and is secured. It is a simple fix.

A quick update. Before I even got a chance to open up the seatback to see what was going on, it “fixed” itself, at least for now.

When I got home from work Friday, I stopped at the end of the driveway to check the mail. As I got out, I turned off the massage seat, which prompted the lumbar support to revert back to the memory setting. I closed the door, went to the mailbox, then just as I was about to open the door, I heard a loud pop, like a balloon popping. It was loud enough that I heard it with all the doors and windows closed. So I opened the rear door, and sure enough, the seatback was flat again.

I got back in the driver’s seat, and made sure all the lumbar support adjustments and the massage seat still worked. Surprisingly, they did! The vented seat still works, too.

I will be opening up the seatback when I have time, just to see what the hell happened. I am almost certain that whatever popped out in the first place will pop back out again. I want to see if there is something I can do to prevent that, and to see if anything looks broken.
