I ordered a truck through a local dealer with incomplete pricing information. I paid the deposit and went on my way, excited about replacing my aging truck. The new truck is being built this week.

After more research and finding this site, I found that I had messed up. I’m not made of money and life circumstances dictate saving money where I can. So I am willing to eat the deposit on the ordered truck to do a better job in the ordering/pricing process.

I understand I’ll be forfeiting the deposit. But am I still obligated to buy the truck?

Did the dealer not tell you your deposit would be fully refundable at any time?

The dealer shouldn’t make you feel obligated at all, after all they’re gonna mark it up after they get it on their lot so it’s no skin off their back if you choose to not follow through and buy your truck

The statement the sales person kept mentioning was “we know life circumstances change.”

I don’t know if that meant that the purchase of the truck was optional or if my deposit was refundable or what.

Looking back on all of this I feel pretty dumb.

This is what I expect to happen. But I am trying to gather as much data as I can and ease my mind somewhat about backing out as the truck is being produced.

These days with low inventory, I would suspect your dealership will high-5 each other if you walk away. Of course if they have good manners they wouldn't celebrate in your face. :)

You've done nothing that hasn't happened many many times and I bet your deposit IS refundable.

I’m sure, just like others will tack on here shortly, the dealer will be very pleased to profit more with these new F-150s hitting the lot. So I’m pretty sure you’ll get your deposit back. Others have put deposits down at more than one place to kinda see who would deliver first… I would hit the dealer up and say that you may have to pull back and would like to take back the deposit.

My dealer gave me the same spiel. I put the deposit on my Credit Card. At the end of the day, if I was going to cancel, (I came close because of delays) my plan was to ask them politely to refund the deposit and if it didn't happen I would've just filed a dispute on my CC and let them deal with the dealership.

I sort of assumed this is how it goes. But with the truck already having been produced, or at least supposed to be this week, I didn’t know the specifics.

The reaction of the dealer might depend on what you ordered. If it is a pretty typical build they can easily sell then they shouldn’t have any problem refunding your deposit. If it is some very unusual special order then they might give some resistance at refunding the deposit.

at least that is what my dealer told me when I ordered. I ended up taking a very similar one off his lot that arrived earlier than my special order. He gave me credit for my deposit and sold my special order to someone else when it arrived. My special order was nothing unusual.

Typically dealerships refund deposits on canceled deals. There were a couple of times I stressed a deposit was not refundable when a customer ordered a hard to sell optioned car. Never had those weird ones cancel. Refunded plenty of deposits over my dealership years.
