Hey everyone.
So since I bought my '21 Tremor, on cold starts there's a rattle that sounds like it's coming from the turbo wastegate. Once the cold start sequence is done and rpm's drop to about 600, the rattle goes away and i don't hear it again until the next cold start. I've taken it to the dealer and they've told me it's normal on the tremors. Are they blowing sunshine or is this really a normal thing? You'll notice the rattle goes away at the last 4 seconds of the video

Hello! Send us a private message with your F-150's VIN and the name & location of your local Ford dealer. I’d be happy to see what I can do to assist with this rattling issue. Thank you!

I just got done watching a video from a Ford master tech on YouTube of his first startup of a 3.5 after doing cam phasers and he actually mentioned wastegate rattle only during the cold start sequence and that Ford put out a bulletin to educate customers that it’s normal. I can’t tell if it’s the microphone or if yours is just a lot louder than mine, but I made a point to listen today and there is a little rattle that goes away once the idle drops.

He talks about it at 6:30 in this video

My man! Thanks for sharing that video. He explained the situation well. And thanks for taking a listen to your own truck. In the video I had my truck parked next to a wall, and that caused the rattle to be much more noticeable with the little echo chamber it was in.

I'm actually at the dealer right now (for an unrelated issue) and I asked them again about the rattle. They explained that during a cold start, the truck's wastegates shut, and the airflow over the gates (that lay together like closed window blinds... Their words) causes them to shutter a bit. Once the engine completes it's cold start cycle, the wastegates open as needed by the trucks computer and are no longer laying together.

I also had them start another Tremor that's here on the lot and it does the same thing.

So I guess it seems to be normal, and just annoying.

Thanks again for the responses! Much appreciated!

Update. After the one dealer insists it's normal, and after them telling me that the wastegate is closed during cold starts, I did a bit of research. From what I understand, the wastegate is actually fully open during cold starts. So why would they tell me it's closed? Am I misunderstanding? If anyone knows here, please fill me in. In the mean time, I'll be taking it to another dealer to get a 2nd opinion. I'll give another update after I get a chance to get out there.

I had the same issue on my brand new 2021 F150 lariat. They told me the flywheel was not working properly and they had to replace it. I have not heard the sound again but time will tell if that was the issue.

Took home my tremor last week. Same exact noise started on mine today on cold start.

You're the 5th tremor owner I've heard about having the same rattle. According to Ford, it's apparently normal. I'm still trying to find time to get a 2nd opinion at another dealer nearby, but I have a feeling they'll say the same thing. ??‍♂

Weird sound. My 21 3.5 ecoboost has a knocking sound 'after' it settles down from the cold start, but it goes away after I drive it

I’m not freaking out about it yet. But it def didn’t do it when I bought it or the first week. I need to pick up plates and papers from the dealer this next week or so, and I’ll raise some questions then, or demand an inspection when they ceramic coat it, especially with the recall on the insulation/drivetrain inspection. I’ll keep ya updated.

I have a 2021 F-150 with the 5.0. It is making the same sound on cold starts. I believe it is coming from the flywheel area. Sounds like something hitting the dust cover for the flywheel/ front of transmission.
I had the same issue on

I have the same noise from my 2021 F-150 XLT with 5.0. I believe it is coming from the flywheel area. I turned the truck off and tapped on the dust cover for the transmission/flywheel with a small metal flash light and it sounded similar.

That does sound similar! Does the tapping go away when the cold start sequence ends?
