Took my 21 Lariat Powerboost to a campground to make a fire and have lunch.

The moment I entered the muddy forest service road, I hit 4H and instantly got a Check Engine light and the wrench icon with the warning "Check 4X4, and Service Now". It also blocked all modes except normal mode stating "Drive modes are not available".

I then tried 4L, and the truck shifted into 4L with no issues. Tried 4H and 4A, and same issue, Check 4x4, and truck shifts automatically back into 2H.

I tried restarting the truck multiple times, no change. Got to the campground in 2H, where it sat turned off for hours, and still same issue. When I got back into town, booked a service appointment for next week the earliest.

This morning I got into the truck, no check engine light, no wrench icon, and truck shifts into 4A, 4H and 4L without any issues. Gonna keep the appointment for them to look it over, but does anyone have any ideas what may be the cause?

Are there any road conditions that are different between the forest service road and where you tested it the next day? Perhaps a difference in terrain or traction conditions are tripping you up, like an issue with a wheel speed sensor, or some equivalent sensor in the transaxle / driveline ?

THink of a way to re-create the conditions of the forest service road, if you can

If I remember correctly, I was on a slight incline when I tried to put it into 4H.

But when I restarted the truck multiple times, I was also on flat pavement, and was still showing the CEL until it sat turned off overnight.

Dealership took a look at it, and couldn't diagnose with the problem was as everything was back to normal when I brought the truck in. All they told me was to keep an eye on it and bring it back if it happens again.

Same issue happened again today. Truck shifted into 4H multiple times. The moment I entered the forest service road, deflated my tires from 40 PSI to 25, re-entered the truck, started it back up, pressed the 4H button and bam. Check engine light, wrench icon and "Check 4x4".

Had the same issue and they replaced an Integrated Wheel End / Hub locking mechanism and said the code was coming from a defective part on one corner not all four. Have attached the work order and hope it helps.

I got my truck back early yesterday afternoon and had the same diagnosis. They estimated to have the part in tomorrow or early next week. The crazy part is it refused to go into 4H, but after I had pulled up to the service bay, gotten out and turned the truck off, gone in and come back out to back up the truck, as soon as I turned it on everything was normal but the truck had shifted itself into 4H without me doing anything so as I backed up with the steering cranked to one side I skidded across the parking lot to my surprise. Very weird. Driving normal at the moment but I don't plan to try 4x4 unless I need it until it goes to the shop.

I've got mine booked into the shop tomorrow morning. Curious if it'll be the same issue.

Currently still not shifting into 4H and solid CEL.

Mine came out of the shop today, looks like same/similar issue. Part should arrive next week.

My f150 is doing the same thing as your truck did. Is your truck having any more issues since Ford fixed it?

Hey, did you get this issue solved? Someone told me it has to be the actuator on the transfer case since 4L works every time and 4A and 4H are intermittent.

I believe it can still be the IWE when this occurs. Granted my Expedition had the TOD system and vacuum hubs but I got these errors and 4L is the only one that worked. The case still went into low range but the 4H would throw a wrench. I’m not sure if the front was actually spinning or if the case just went into low range. IWE fixed it. The teeth were shot.
