CAI - intake system

looking at intake systems, not seeing much chatter in the search regarding these for the 5.0. are they all pretty equal performance wise, just pick your price point? are there any that are recommended to avoid? im just looking at a mild build, intake, exhaust, tune type of setup.

youre going to find a lot of hate...or people who loathe the thought of CAI's here. their filters arent up to snuff and are letting too much dirt into the intake track. oh, and how cold air means just shit when the turbo heats it up before sending it to the intercooler...

dont get me wrong, i'm not a huge fan of the factory "scoop" but Cobb makes a nice carbon fiber replacement.

Might want to check the section you're in. The 5.0 doesn't have turbos or intercoolers.

ive seen similar opinion of intakes such as you previously mentioned on other boards (ram) as well. i was curious to see how far that opinion carried over to other brands and forums. still interested in one as ive taken 2 previous trucks over 225k miles with them installed with zero issues by the time i traded them in.

I went with the Volant Performance intake for the Donaldsons PowerCore filter, since I see a lot of off-road miles.

I wouldn't expect any performance gain with an intake on this engine. The OE intake is nicely designed and pulls cold air from the snorkel.

Are filter changes fairly easy with this setup? I like the S&B but I'm fairly certain you need to take the whole intake tube off to get the filter out of the box. I'm hoping there's one available that isn't like that.

Crazy easy. Just undo the top, undo the hose clamp, voila.

i saw a vid of the S&B intake install and they installed the box and tube first. then couldnt drop the filter in the box because a portion of the tube is inside the box. they had to take the tube off the TB and back it out a bit, drop the filter in and then reconnect the tube. is suspect that is what the other user may be referencing. may have just been the guys working on it, i didnt look up any other S&B vids to see if that was the case

LOL now that you mention it, i do recall seeing him roast them for their diesel intake!

I used the K&N 30-2616KC. It uses the stock air box. Simple install. A little pricey for what you get but I do like it.
