Are some updates OTA only?

I was wondering if some updates are OTA only and would not show up in FDRS.

I don't work for Ford, so I don't know for sure.

But I would think the latest available update in FDRS for any specific module would be 'current' on whatever adjustments Ford has made through OTA updates.

It could certainly be plausible that you could need a FDRS update to a module to then receive a specific OTA update.

For example if your BCM (Body Control Module) is on rev. 6.3 and:
FDRS has an update to go to rev 7.0
and OTA already has an update for 7.2 if you never get updated to 7.0, you'll never see the 7.2 come through on OTA updates. But if 7.2 is already available when you do an FDRS update, it should skip 7.0 and go right to 7.2.
That is all assuming that there could be some updates that are too large to be done through the OTA process.

Also now that we are into a new Model refresh 2024, there have been changes in the hardware, so there will likely be differences between updates for 21-23 and 24+ model years.

I've updated my truck mostly with FDRS. The only OTA updates I've had appear are some priority updates for various modules. But there have been quite a few OTA updates recently and nothing other than a DDM module update has appeared for my '21 Lariat PB. Thus the question.

There have been reports of people getting updates via OTA they could not see on FDRS. I do believe that the two in long run have same updates but may not always be in sync.
