Germaine Ford in Beavercreek Ohio is telling me that this AGM deep cycle battery I installed 8 months ago is the cause of my PB going in No Drive mode and getting the message turn off ignition to save battery 2 times the last week. The battery checks fine but they are saying because it’s a deep cycle that is the problem. I thought so long as it’s AGM it would be fine. Thoughts. Thanks

Following...I was getting the same message. It seems when I take the truck on a decent drive, the message goes away? I have a 22' Platinum 3.5L with 701A package.

I had the same issue on multiple occasions. It finally ended with software downloads and a new BCM. I asked for batteries too. But didn’t get those replaced.

As to the deep cycle versus starting battery issue... What a bunch of malarky. They both produce 12VDC and sustain it for their respective design times. However, unless you're doing something like winching, you just don't need a deep cycle battery.

I am no expert on batteries but my understanding is deep cycle batteries are for providing long term power discharge vs. a battery for short term high output cranking amps for starting the engine. For example I put two deep cycle 6 VT golf cart batteries in my camper to run the lights and frig electronics vs a car battery. So they may have a point on the deep cycle being the incorrect battery. I could be wrong and looking for someone with more knowledge to chime in.

Deep cycle batteries and starter batteries are constructed differently. Starter batteries have closely packed plates to get a lot into a smaller place with higher power. They can only sustain discharges beyond maybe 10% a few times before they fail. Deep cycle catteries are assembled with more room for plates and active material to spall off. The issue is the discharge and charge products are physically different in size. Thus when you repeatedly cycle a deep discharge battery it can sustain that since the extra space allows the spalling off of active material to fall away without causing damage. Since a starter battery is so closley packed if it is taken down beyond say 10% discharge, that spalling off will eventually short out a plate, killing the battery. But at the end of the day, they both produce 12VDC and will not be discernable as "different" to the computer for the most part. The post immediately above about deep cycle batteries not being good for starting is not accurate. If you get the correct size battery for your car it will work just fine.

UPDATE. The dealer put in a non deep cycle AGM battery and so far the rig is performing flawlessly. With the deep cycle AGM battery I was getting all sorts of weird error messages at random times such as driving down a city road and the error message that would pop up was to have both hands on the wheel. A nice reminder but that comes up when in cruise control. None of those or any of the other error messages so at this point I'm considering it fixed. Thanks for everyone that took time to post and help me.

Curious that a new deep cycle battery would cause that versus a new Ford Battery... What the dealer put in was it a Ford battery?

OK, In my observation of a lot of posts on battery issues, the one common thread is that Ford batteries are the culprit to such problems. I have no idea what the fault is but that is a clear common thread. My thought for you, if you're willing to split for it, is to go get a non-Ford battery. That's what I did, by circumstance, 4 months after delivery. I didn't specify anything different from the standard size battery for the 21 PB. I got a NAPA battery and have had zero problems since across three Wyoming winters.

Thanks for the information and sharing what has worked for you. Just as soon as I start getting error messages if I do I'll do the same as you. Wyoming winters can be brutal on batteries. I grew up near Wolf Point Montana, lots of stuff doesn't want to work in the winter there.

We traveled the US full time for 3 years and made it to a few places in Wyoming and Union Pass was one of them. Also did Thermopolis and Greybull.
