So my 5.0 with 100k has what I believe is cam phaser noise when I start out driving when it is cold. I started noticing some light noise around 50-60k and has been getting louder sport mode makes it real noticeable when gas pedal is fluctuated in my neighborhood, so I have been leaving in normal until it warms up good. After it warms up to normal temp I don't hear it in sport mode. No noise at start up at all. I have changed oil every 5k and the first oil change was at 1k with valvoline extended 5w30 oil which I used the first 35k then switched to pennzoil ultra 5w30 going forward with motorcraft filter everytime. I do use this for work. The truck has 3029 total hours with 974 idle hours for reference. Just wanted to see if anyone else has experienced this and any thoughts.

From everything I’ve read, seen and heard about cam phaser rattle if it’s not making the noise at start up it’s likely not the cam phasers causing your noise.

My experience with cam phasers on my 17 3.5 when they went is that it only did the noise for about 10 seconds on cold start. Then was no noise.

Cam phasers would usually only make noise on start up causing slack in timing chain. If you have no noise on start up, most likely not the issues. Is it only in drive when you hear if? Can you hear it idling? Stupid question, is your oil level full? Sport mode doesn’t change anything other than shift patterns and strategy. It does leave engine in different RPMs so you may have an internal issue.

What kind of a noise is it? Rattle? or more of a rumble? Mine has been making a loud rumble noise when the truck's cold and accelerating almost like a manifold leak, when the truck is warm its quiet though. Mine has 55k on it for reference and I just recently started noticing it

Yes oil is full . Can't hear it at idle. It truly sounds like the cam phaser( tapping sound) but more pronounced in sport mode when engine is cold. Im thinking sport mode must have an effect on valve timing since it changes tone under on and off throttle going at low speeds again when cold. The only other thing i can think of is some sort of lifter noise but I would think sport mode would effect that

I’m pretty sure sport mode changes transmission shift points and the throttle response via accelerator pedal. You could have a manifold leak also. Once it warms up it will go away. Do you think a video would help?

I'm very sceptical it's a phaser.
And ticking isn't exactly the best description for a faulty phaser either.

If you raise the hood and get your head fairly close to the front of the plastic valve cover, there's no mistaking the precise location and the very distinctive sound of a "dry" phaser locking pin hunting for that hole to slip into.

Even the timing chain slap sounds different if you have the hood up and up close and personal.

Note: admittedly I am describing the Ecoboost phasers. So I might be completely wrong about the Coyote?

Again only in sport mode and when engine is cold it is very noticeable so manafold leak would be heard in any mode.

Clattering could be result of a timing chain guide or tensioner beginning to fail. But you’ve heard the noise for quite some time, I’d be willing to be it’s either your injection system or internal noise thats curbed itself for sometime. Have you had any work done? They use heavy dense foam around injectors and pump to mitigate noise. When engine and fuel is cold, it tends be louder. Sport mode keeps your rpm’s up which in turn would make the chatter louder. Maybe I’d have have the hood open and have someone keep the revs around 2-3k while your poking around to pinpoint if you can hear the noise that way.

Do you have any codes? The issue may not cause a check engine light but can throw a code. An easy way to check is with FORSCAN.

I thought about this a lot today and id be looking at the VCT solenoids. Since the noise is only when cold that wouldn't be a phaser.

Thanks for the info. So i tried to do a recording this am but it never sounds the same as hearing it. I noticed if I hold the rpms at about 1800 to around 2500 it has the rattling as I play with the throttle. Bring up rpms to 3 or above I don't hear that noise. Puzzles me.

Really need to see if it has any soft codes.
