22 PB - 1080R whining, periodic harsh & sluggish shifts

Hey all,

Trying to get a video of this is difficult as it’s intermittent; some days I go with no problems, others it’s constant. Most of the time I really notice this on drives over 40-50 miles or at highway speeds for a longer time.

Essentially the truck will either have some sluggish and/or hard shifts, along with a whining as the RPMs increase and during the shift. I have included a few videos for everyone to view and I appreciate any feedback. Unfortunatly my local Ford dealer just closed down, and since I don’t have a light I’m not really sure what bringing it to service is going to do but hoping with some guidance I may have a leg or a tbd to stand on.

You have the exact same problem mine does. Mine is on its 3rd transmission from Ford. It is currently at the dealer, going on a month for this issue. Tech escalated to FSE and going through the hotline. Right now, they are ordering a new trans cooler because when i got it to do it with the tech on a drive, he saw my trans temp gauge went past middle. He said it was overheating. That explained the smell i would get sometimes, as the trans fluid would spew out of a relief valve. My original problem was hard shift from 10 to 9. Then, after a while, it would do it across different gears. Always on the highway after sometimes 30-60 mins of driving. What i figured out was, it would start after some kinda spirited driving in congested traffic on the highway. The trans was constantly shifting gears. Then, when i went on the drive with the tech, the whinning sound appeared. Told him that was new. He said he thought he saw a TSB that just came out for the whinning sound. Anyway, take it to the dealer. You can replicate it in shorter time by some constant on/off the gas in the left lane on the highway. Making the trans shift constantly. It'll start in like 5-10 mins if the truck is at normal temps already.

You got me beat, my 23 PB went through 2 transmissions, then a catastrophic failure of the electric pump last month caused an entire rebuilt of the 2nd transmission all over again. The funny thing is, the shop foreman was driving it and the truck left him walking instead of me this time. Lol

Oh well, the trucks gone to some other sucker.

Some new findings, the goal was to bring it in today and now it’s a must. Leak coming from the back of the transmission still not codes. Issues described before happen almost every 35+ mile drive.

The 10R80 is a disposable item like wiper blades and brake pads. The worst thing Ford has done in a long time, was try and "develop" a new transmission instead of just going with a tried-and-true ZF product.

Some updates coming back from the dealer. Two things were done thus far.

They said the reason for the leak is the transmission had too much fluid... I don't know how it took 52K miles for us to identify that, but the "leak was actually fluid coming out of the overflow.

They also performed the TSB with the shifting updates. (didn't get the TSB #, but once I pick it up I will ask for it)

Hopefully this helps, but I will continue to update this thread with any more updates.

Mine did the same thing. Except, when i was on test drive with tech and the whining and tranny issues started, he and I noticed the trans temp gauge went past the middle. He said it was overheating. Then came the transmission fluid smell. Also, had fluid spill in my garage floor. Tech stated when trans overheats, the fluid will bubble out of a vent valve. They have replaced the trans cooler valve/module but transmission issues still occur. Back at the dealer again. Last time was 30 days. been a week now. In total, been in the shop 45-50 days now. I have called Ford and officially requested they buy back the truck now. Waiting on their decision.

Wow my optimism is diminishing quickly… what year? How many miles?

haha, my optimism died a long time ago...mine is a 23 PB Platinum. It all started around 7k miles on the odometer. truck as 15k miles and the trans has been jacked the entire time. I bought it certified used with 3k miles on it.
