I have a 2022 Platinum Powerboost. Only has 3,900 miles on it and it has developed a squeak or chirp - usually when going from electric to engine and back, but can happen other times (primarily after stopping - it happens less while driving - or maybe I can’t hear it).

It appears to be coordinated with the wastegate linkage movements. I tried some dry graphite lube on the linkage, but no luck.

I am going to try to attach a video - squeak is at 5 seconds. Squeak is much louder in person - engine noise appears to overwhelm my phone’s mic.

Anyone else experiencing this? If the truck were 10 years old, I wouldn’t mind - but as it is new, it is driving me crazy.

There's been a couple of threads/posts with similar descriptions of "chirp" at the switch between EV/ICE.

I think fingers have been pointed at the Exhaust Heat Exchanger valve squeaking, as well as the auxiliary transmission fluid pump. So the wastegate linkage is now an additional potential culprit.

With the help of a friend it should be easy enough to differentiate the location of the chirp if you can at least replicate it in Park?

With the truck in electric mode, just tap the throttle and ICE will ignite. Does it chirp? And then when ICE turns off, does it chirp?

Thanks for the response. I had my wife press the accelerator to get the ICE to engage.

The chirp is primarily when the ICE shuts off - I don’t think it’s the switch to electric that does it, but I could see people thinking that because the ICE shuts off when the switch happens. My guess is that this would probably happen in a non-hybrid 3.5.

I couldn’t hear it when the ICE starts.

In the video, you can see the sound coordinate with the linkage moving, but it isn’t a perfect correlation. I probably watched it do that 15 times - it is almost always when the ICE turns off - almost.

I was also worried it was tied to my catch can (which is highly unlikely) so I reinstalled the OEM hose and the chirp remains.

I am going to call the dealer and take it in now that I have it on video - though it appears to be more and more frequent and easier to replicate.

So you do in fact hear it coming from an open hood engine bay more distinctly than if you were under it on the passenger side near the rear of the transmission pan?

The auxiliary pump is above the pan. It kicks on the moment the ICE turns off.
And yes, it would do so even on a regular 3.5 Ecoboost that is equipped with auto stop/start.

I just tried it again, and I can’t tell. I can hear it pretty clearly from the engine bay and from the passenger side near the transmission.

It’s loud enough that I can hear it in the cab with the windows rolled up.

I also got it to make the noise after acceleration but without it shutting off. So, I am at a loss.

I do have the Talon’s Garage transmission/cat shield.

This is a video of the noise from the passenger side. It can be heard better in the video, but in person, it is about the same volume / noticability from the side and from the engine bay.

I'm at 24k miles and just noticed this for the first time a couple of weeks ago. I hear it every time it switches from ICE to electric now. I don't like it, LOL.

Hello, David! Send us a private message with your VIN and the name and location of your local Ford dealer. I’d be happy to see what I can do to assist with this concern. Thanks!

I am going to take it to the dealer on Monday. We’ll see how it goes. They’ve already said that they will need it for 5 business days.

Dropped it off today. It made the noise loud and clear when I first started it up. I get to the dealer and of course it wouldn’t make the noise. I had sent the service representative the videos, so they know what to look for. We’ll see how it goes.

I will say the service advisor was awesome, so that’s a good thing.

Update: the diagnosis is the heat exchanger. Looks like I was completely wrong about the wastegate linkage.

Part should be here today or tomorrow. Let’s hope it takes care of the noise.

I'm really happy for you, but ummmmm, that's why I asked what I asked above. ??

Those wastegates are a long ways away from the auxiliary transmission pump and the exhaust heat exchanger servo valve.

Hrm, that may be a coolant diversion valve that works in concert with the heat scavenger. Snake may take a closer look at the manual and see if there's not a valve that works to flow coolant that way when the exhaust heat scavenger is in operation?

My 2021 power boost started the exact same loud chirp mentioned here about a year ago. Went to dealer while under warranty and they said I’d have to pay to reapir. Was very frustrated and now I just have to deal with this loud noise. Have had fords for years but this has made me lose trust in their warranty coverage. OP what was the result of your repair?

Good afternoon, David. Would you please send over a private message with your VIN and dealer info so I can look into this noise concern on my end?
