I have 2,600 miles on this vehicle. Shortly after purchase I had large leak spot in drive. Took to dealer and after two inspections they could not find anything leaking. They said it was probably condensation from the exhaust weep holes. Didn’t sound right but not being a mechanic I trusted their diagnosis. Last Friday I was hauling our trailer down to Seward when a “coolant overheating” narrative popped up in the message center. I looked at the coolant reservoir and it was below the minimum mark. After sitting for about a half hour I turned around and went to Kendall Ford in Wasilla where I purchased the vehicle. They filled the reservoir and said to make an appointment. However, appointments are not available until 4 weeks out. I continued my journey. When I checked this morning the coolant was once again below the minimum so I took it to the dealer and they will ”try” to work it in. The guy who topped off the fluid on Friday said they had the same issue on a power boost about a month ago. I don’t like what I’m reading on this forum but we’ll see what happens.

This sucks but in the meantime if I were you I’d buy some coolant and keep it in the truck and keep topping it off. Seems like the leak is bad but not so bad that topping off frequently can’t keep you on the road.

Hi there, Darwin! This definitely doesn’t sound like the experience we want you to be having. If you'd like to, go ahead and send a private message to us with your VIN and dealership info. I’d be happy to look into this for you. Thanks!

Welcome and condolences for joining the leaking ranks @Fiberfinn .

Assuming your leak was draining the large reservoir, and the puddle was under the front passenger seat, you have a heat exchanger leak.

If you check out this post in the thread @cclark20 linked above, there are a number of us with this issue and we are still waiting on parts. If you can provide me some data (bottom of the post), I can add you to the list.

The following info may help your Ford tech find the issue quicker than looking through the engine compartment and following the coolant lines:

Original part# (dependent on bed size) ML3Z-5A212-S.
The updated part for a 5.5 foot bed is ML3Z-5A212-W.
The updated part for a 6.5 foot bed is ML3Z-5A212-V.

A good pic of the leak close up was posted here by @Sir Choppins .

Below is a good pic from @Oxford_Powerboost that I added some arrows to. The leak is above the exhaust, under the passenger seat, and the leak sometimes shows on the bolts tack welded onto the aluminum tray that separates the heat exchanger valve from the exhaust.

My 2022 is in the shop currently with 4300 miles on it for a coolant leak. Mine has been diagnosed (at least so far) with a cracked thermostat housing leaking down onto the transmission cooler lines which drip down onto the skid plate and onto the ground in the general area under the front of the passenger front seat.

I noticed my large coolant reservoir leaking two weeks before it left a spot on my driveway. I expected it was the heat exchanger but so far that part has remained dry.

According to the GM of the dealership, they are installing the part on my truck today and will update. I'm really hoping that is the only leaking part.

Good luck to you.

I hope your heat exchanger stays dry!

they diagnosed yesterday by using dye and a black-light. The leak is coming from a plastic tank attached to the exhaust system. It’s purpose is to preheat the coolant before it’s used for something else. They can’t replace just the tank. They have to replace an exhaust assembly. They ordered the part and discovered it’s on back-order. They have no idea how long it will take. So much for Ford and their better ideas!

They have no idea when the part will arrive. All things considered, this is probably the worst vehicle decision I have ever made.

I hope this doesn't come across too much like rubbing salt in wounds. That's really not at all my intent. I frequently remember what the head of EV development at a very large global car, truck and bus manufacturer told a group of us a few years back. He was talking about EV plans for busses, including school busses and heavy truck platforms (semi trucks). Someone asked why they weren't doing hybrids. His answer was that vehicles are getting increasingly heavy and complex and the idea of two power plants in one vehicle was an idea that should have gone away shorty after it came. It doubles the failure modes.

Now, this is of course mainly about commercial vehicles but his responsibility extends across all of their products, including passenger cars and light trucks.

I didn't consider a Powerboost because I really wouldn't take advantage of the extra capabilities it has. And I am impressed by it on paper. I'm just not sure I'd want to own one outside the warranty period and unfortunately the capability of many dealers hasn't kept pace with the vehicle design evolution. OTA updates, driver assistance technologies, the list goes on.

Well it isn't like a Twin Turbo Variable Valve Timing Dual Fueled Ecoboost isn't an already rather complicated drivetrain.

It's out of warranty repair co$t potential is daunting as well.
Heck, almost every American truck currently produced could sting you out of warranty.

Fair point. I have a German car with a power retractable hardtop that is 3 years beyond warranty. I cringe every time I push the button to operate it. Sometimes they just throw their hands up and replace the whole roof system .
