I have a 2022 2.7 2wd that when I come to a stop I’m getting a clunk or thud sound I believe coming from the transmission when I it goes into 1st gear. This issue doesn’t happen all the time and it seems to happen if I get past 5th or 6th gear, then come to a stop. Has anyone else experienced a similar issue or have any insight on what this might be. I don’t experience any other issues with the transmission skipping gears or any other quirks . Thanks!

I recently started having that issue, among others, with the transmission. Was pretty shocked when the strong clunk first happened, but not really surprised. Been having a lot of hesitating shift issues in the lower gears, so I figured the clunk was just an extension of that. Higher gears shift smoothly. I'll be taking it in soon for the dealer to check it out but have little hope they'll find anything until it goes out of warranty. Replaced my 2003 with this 2022, never had transmission issues with the "03.

Does it happen all the time or is it sporadic?

Try driving it in tow/haul mode and see if it goes away. The shifts are much smoother. Mine will clunk sometimes in normal but never in tow/haul. I think it is programming more than a mechanical issue. I like tow/haul much better for anything other than interstate driving. I really dislike how it is always shifting into a higher gear too soon and lugging the engine.

Mine does the same thing. Only clunked hard once and it’s always in such a high gear. I will try tow mode while driving in town and see if that helps.

Mine kinda drops into first at times. I suppose you could call it a clunk but I think anyone riding in the truck wouldn't even notice. But definitely a bit of a thud. I think I recall looking and this is not abnormal either.

My tow/haul is just as bad as normal for me just does it at higher RPM. I'm good in upper gears too. But for me 3-4-5 can kinda drop into gear too at times. 75% of the time they're smooth though. And my 6-5 downshift will lurch unless I provide steadily increasing brake pedal pressure as I am slowing down.

I've reflashed twice. Really makes no difference. My trans fluid level is good. Dealer did a software update maybe a year ago but also doesn't seem to have done anything.

It is what it is but the driveability of the 10 speed really detracts from the ownership experience for me. It should operate in the background but it is always doing stuff that draws attention. Really my only true complaint on the truck. Frankly wish they had just licensed the ZF 8-Speed.

What year is your truck? My 2018 was so bad I just got rid of it. My 23 is much better but as you say, the transmission is still the thing that is always annoying me. After having a few Dodge/RAM products with the ZF 8 sp, I have to agree that it is the gold standard. I'm sure Ford is wishing they had just licensed it after all the lawsuits, warranty claims and bad press.

2023. First Ford. Prior experience with the ZF in BMWs. Its great. Incredibly smooth and yet can be lightning quick shifts when you want as well. I had a DSG VW in the past and frankly while the ZF wasn't quite as snappy/sporty as the DSG it was close enough and the ZF never would stumble like the DSG sometimes could. DSG was a cool transmission too though. I originally wanted a manual but after a test drive and dealing with a traffic-heavy commute I pretty quickly fell in love with the DSG.

Family member had a Focus with the horrible dual-clutch though. It was really too bad. The car held up great for over 130,000 miles...except the transmission was rebuilt 2-3 times. All paid by Ford but the hassle and time without the car was a real pain for them. They bought a Lexus after that...
