I am noticing when I was running my 21 PB on a 600mi trip that when the trans fluid temp gets pretty warm, eg, 210 or so that it really clanks hard shifting between 9th and 10th gear and hunts a bit between those gears. But it seems to be a problem I only encounter when the trans is running pretty warm and under load at 70+ ascending a grade under load as the turbo is rolling on boost to hold speed under cruise control or otherwise. Is this smelling like CDF issue or trashcan issue. It’s under warranty with Ford but replicating would only be possible by running it up hard under a strap grade and with fluid temps elevate. I shudder at the thought at what would have happened had I been pulling a trailer or something, which I wasn’t at the time. although I said nothing to my spouse who was with me at the time, even she comment at the loud thump when it was shifting if everything was ok.

Ford owner’s manual for ‘21+ online suggests using Manual to tow trailer, so if you do tow trailer you could consider that. Also, you can use what they call progressive range selection, and lockout gears. For example, in your case, lock out 10th so it won’t shift into that. Link to ‘21 owners manual should be above telling you how to do it but basically pressing the minus button while in drive to deselect possible gears and + button to add them back in for use by the auto transmission. You may have to scroll a page or two forward to get to your gear selector type. I’d assume your PB has that capability too, but something to know if you didn’t already.

I appreciate the feedback and guidance. Locking out 9th and 10th gear under manual gear selection may make a big difference in the scenario that I was running the truck under. What I’ve also found, is it my tendency around town as I have been running the truck on short trips in which the natural tendency of the truck under normal shifting is to put the motor into stop & run on the hybrid battery. With that, fluid temperatures don’t come up to maximum operating temperature, which means that the oil isn’t boiling off the fuel dilution or necessarily the condensation from sitting out overnight.. When I use the tow haul mode, it takes it out of the auto start stop or the fuel economy preference setting and runs the motor a little more, which brings the temperatures up closer to full operating temperature and with that it tends to burn the fuel dilution and condensation off better, which works for me in and around town on trips, that I would not necessarily exceed a lot of time driving which I consider to be 20 minutes or more.

mine is in the shop right now for this same problem. This is on a new transmission that has approx 3k miles on it. really hard shifts from 10 to 9 and then when shifts back to 10, it is searching and jolting.

As per my experience, first thing is to do all required updates through FDSR then see how it goes. I had terrible tranny until I updates everything through FDSR. Now its running like a charm. Mine is also 2021 so for sure you have many major updates.

That is my intention as I was planning to update several modules known to be out of date. My plan is to pickup a mongoose cable next month and hopefully get to the FDRS upgrades in April when we warm up a bit more here from the winter.
