Any one have the auto hold function fail? It has happened to me 3 times in the last 2 weeks. come to a stop let off the brake and the truck accelerates. Pulled over shut off the truck then it worked fine. I took it to the dealer and was told there was nothing they could do because it wasn't logging a code. After I wouldn't accept that because I consider it a safety issue they opened a ticket with Ford Engineering. I reserched the function and found there are 4 conditions when it will not activate, none are present when it doesn't work.

What is showing in your cluster when this happens? I always verify the green hand symbol pops up before taking my foot off the brake. It’s a habit I learned in my previous car as that one required an extra brake push to confirm auto hold (worked kind of like setting the park brake on a golf cart). If it’s showing green and the truck still rolls, definitely a problem. If it’s showing white with a strike through, a condition isn’t met and you should keep your foot on the brake. With that said, I’m watching mine cause my Powerboost occasionally feels like someone bumped me from behind and moves an inch before the brakes clamp down harder. Hasn’t moved any more than that though

What are the 4 functions that you found that disable auto-hold? There was a discussion about it in another thread. I think the door being closed and the seatbelt fastened were two things mentioned.

Checking for the icon on the gauge cluster is a good tip, also when I was using it, I was able to get it to not activate by slowing to nearly a stop and then letting the truck creep forward when I didn't want it to activate. It takes a complete stop and then half a second for it to activate in my truck.

You also say it accelerates, which it shouldn't be doing at all if you don't have a foot on the gas pedal. Without the auto-hold, in drive, without your foot on the gas or the brake, the truck will move forward at a walking pace just like any vehicle with a torque converter transmission but it shouldn't be gaining any speed. If you don't have big feet or a floor mat that might be fouling the gas pedal, it's possible that the encoder is bad in the gas pedal assembly and giving the computer incorrect information.

I've noticed auto-hold is a little different on these trucks too. I usually brake very gradually with little pressure on the brake pedal, but in my last vehicle (2020 Escape) auto-hold would engage as soon as the vehicle came to a stop. In my 2021 F150, if I come to a stop slowly, auto-hold doesn't always engage until I tap the brake pedal a little further after I've come to a stop.

There have been instances where I stop and would expect it to engage but idle forward when I let off the pedal but that little extra tap has always fixed it for me. Knock on wood I haven't had any outright failures.

When I picked up my pickup (pun intended) the dealer wanted to activate this feature on my truck. I explained to him that I don't trust 'automatic' features like that, just as I don't trust the 'lane centering' option also. I enjoy driving and having control of my vehicle too much to let the vehicle drive me. I know my comment is of no help to your situation. Just my two cents.

The 5 situations I found where the auto hold will no engage are:
1) When you use park assist
2)Your vehicle is in stay in neutral mode ( I have no idea what this mode is)
3) The Driver door is open
4) You have not fastened your seat belt
5) You shift into Reverse before the system is active

He is the details on the failure

I came to a complete stop and when I let off the brake the truck floored it to get up to speed. I had cruise set.
I was the 1st in line at the red light so luckily no harm as I slammed on the break. I notice the green indicator wasn't on.
I shut off the cruise put it in park then back to drive. Pushed on the brake several times and still nothing.
At the next light I tried it again same failure so I pulled into a parking lot shut the truck off waited approx. 15 seconds and turned it back on. It worked the next two days and failed in the same way again. shut it off and back on and it worked for a week then failed again.
So I disabled the auto hold function for a couple of days then enabled it again. It hasn't failed now in a week.
The indicator doesn't come on so it didn't engage, the dealer said there were no codes. If cruise is off when it fails it just creeps forward. Now I won't take my foot off the brake until I see the green indicator come on and keep my foot hovering over the pedal just in case.

So you’re saying your truck is accelerating unintended?? You’re not on any pedals, and the truck is accelerating to high speeds? That’s really wrong. Are you having to stand on the brakes when this happens or shifting to neutral to stop it? Ensure your floor mat isn’t on the accelerator…and the green light in the cluster should come on EVERY TIME before you let off the brake. If the light is not on, the truck is not in auto hold, it will move. Have you ever seen auto hold work without the green indicator?

The only time the truck accelerated was when I had cruise on. The other times when it happened I turned cruise off before I let off the brake. I did check the floor mats because I had that happen once in my Dodge. I absolutely watch for the green light like a hawk. I honestly didn't pay a lot of attention to the green light before this happened.

I did some Google searches to try and understandstand the feature and the message you are getting. Found information on how it works and overwhelming amount of information on faults with the feature but none on F150 other then your post. Seems the ABS system which hill assist is part of can drain your battery. I would call a mechanic and ask what's going on.

Dropped it off today. They called and said they want to keep it overnight because the tech wants to "reprogram" the truck, then test drive in the morning. I'll post a followup when I get the truck back. ?‍♂

Hi Ford, I am wondering if you found out anything? It has failed again a couple weeks ago but it was after the dealer closed so I couldn't show the failure to them. I don't know what good that would do other then agreeing it is happening as they have n clue what to do..
Thanks,

Don
