I have a 21 powerboost and am slowly preparing for the day that I run into the 10r80 issues that seem to be common.

I tried searching around the site, but no luck. Is there an agreed upon overhaul/tuneup for the 10r80 transmission? A list of parts etc... that should be considering if it needs work?

Thanks

The CDF drum and f clutch bushing seems to be the major issue.

yes agreed - lots of transmission companies out there selling "upgraded" rebuilds. I don't need something fine tuned for towing or crazy horsepower. Just a list of what's wisest when the day eventually comes.

Something similar to this ecoboost overhaul video, but for transmission:

Ford's rebuilds recently started to include a different colored drum, suggesting a new part. So hopefully the upgrade is naturally part of the rebuild kit.

Ford has a 150k fluid change interval. Won't wait that long for mine.

My local ford dealership has 96000 km fluid change as spec'd (60k miles)...

yeah, from what I heard is the different anodizing supposedly hardens the alloy drum a slight bit more

yes, a transmission guy that I highly respect says service the transmission at 50k. Even sooner, if you to regularly

I think I’ll be servicing the transmission like I have my Toyotas for the last 20 years. Drain and fill every 30k

Pan drain at 30k, pan drop at 60k w/ filter replacement. Loosen the bolts on the valve body to get out even more fluid out of it leaving only what won't drain out of the torque converter. (replace the rubber tube seal thingies on pan drop)

The rebuild, you can't enter the trans without replacing all of the seals, you also want the new CDF drum. You can source these parts elsewhere for cheaper. One issue, there's zero info on the hybrid clutch pack inside of the hybrid drive unit. That links the ICE to the EV motor that's attached to the torque converter. Still no info on anything regarding the hybrid unit. It has a trans style clutch in it and ford lists all of the hybrid drive unit as not serviceable

Hey thanks for the link (and for your work on the LFP battery)

Which of the options in there should i eventually be looking at? a lot of this stuff is above my head

My take: the transmission fluid & filter change at 150,000 is only good if you're gonna trade-in anyway well before that. If you're for the long haul of life, start changing oil & filter earlier. I did my first at 15,000 and have been frequent since. Why? Well in my mind the issue is, despite Ford's emphasis on cleanliness, there is much opportunity for dirt getting in. I'm not talking of the big chunks. This a piece of hydraulic machinery, it has lots of finely machined pistons in close tolerance places. A piece of dirt, and I'm talking of microns, can work its way into a place that can make your go do poorly. So pick what you're comfortable with, but change that stuff out.

On the filter change, I'd consider dropping the valve body and using these on the clips

For rebuild,
New CDF drum
https://suncoastdiesel.com/i-30501187-10r80-cdf-triple-drum-new-design.html
Rebuild kit (pistons may not be needed, but it's a small additional cost)
https://suncoastdiesel.com/i-30501086-10r80-transmission-overhaul-kit-with-pistons.html
And the GPZ clutches that can hold 20% more power than factory

Again, those are for reference. I've found the parts cheaper elsewhere.

wow thanks man
I actually called suncoast and they said their products are not suitable for the powerboost trucks - maybe they were mistaken?

Honestly I was having the same thoughts and would absolutely want to hire a professional to do this, I have no business rebuilding a hybrid transmission. The problem is...is there anybody, or any company willing to do a rebuild on the hybrid transmissions?

Otherwise I wonder if it would be worth it to buy a 2023 or 2024 transmission that has the upgraded CDF drums in them and have someone just do a 1 for 1 replacement.

Expensive I know...

The trans internals are the same. The difference starts w/ the TC forward. There's some extra parts attached to the trans for the hybrid stuff, but the parts listed are the same.

NOT THE EXACT ONE YOU WANT

If you look at the upgrades to the torque converter, the valve body and the gear/clutch packs, i think that the cost of "awesome transmission" vs "basic rebuild" becomes pretty small. My big question is: do you pull and rebuild the engine at the same time? I would love ceramic coated piston crowns, valves, exhaust passages and combustion chambers, and the 3.5 has aftermarket support. So in a nutshell, my question is: can you put $20k in to get a vehicle that's better than what's on the lot? I'm in the process of finishing my build apart from this stuff; the FullRace exhaust manifold, turbo blankets and radiator as well as the tune and BerClaw brakes are the last major upgrades left. In my opinion, the best F150 that Ford produces would be a step down, so I would very much like to preserve the extensive time and money poured into this project.

I think that the driveshaft and auxiliary transmission cooler are also places where you want to upgrade if at all possible if you are really using the truck as a truck.
