Federal minimum requirements for cetane are enough for any modern diesel engine. The ONLY additive that is useful is anti-gel (anti-freeze) for the fuel.
but this is about gas additives.

And Cadillac, BMW, Toyota, and the like would be quite surprised to find that TopTier doesn't matter.

Techron additive is a concentrate of chevron's version of the toptier additives.

If you regularly use toptier, other gas additives will not generally be needed. The very purpose of the standard is to guarantee manufacturers that there are enough cleansers, etc., for high compression.

Recently saw a YouTube video about catch cans, one against their use, and they recommend using a fuel additive every 5k miles to keep your valves clean instead. ??‍♂

Techron and Seafoam have been what I’ve used. Motul has a good one I heard.

+ 1 to just use top tier fuel and skip any additive, same goes for oil. Run whatever synthetic brand you like with an oil that meets Ford's spec for your engine.

I'm an Amsoil fanboy, but also because I pay for their premium membership (Pays for itself).

After reading this thread I bought a bottle of Lucas "deep clean" fuel system cleaner. But I never used fuel additives before and never had a problem. The more I think about it the more I'm hesitant to dump it in. Is there any chance this junk can cause harm? What does Ford sat about it?

there are certainly a number of snake oils out there; I couldn't guess as to whether that is one or not.

I can tell you that the Techron additive is simply an even more concentrated version of what goes into Chevron's top tier.

I suggest you go back to my post you quoted and observe the post I quoted when I wrote that ... ;)
nah, one bank reference is my limit!

Thanks for posting this. I have seen this guy before. Appears to be valid tests and actual science.

Cliff notes: Oil additives always bad, some even worse than others. Fuel additives good. They all contain Polyetheramine and clean injector and combustion chamber deposits. I will continue to not use oil additives, and will not be afraid to occasionally use a name brand injector cleaning fuel additive.

Auto additives are highly profitable for a modest investment in chemicals. For diesel engines I have used a cetane booster in the USA and for gas engines I use a fuel injector cleaner every 40K miles. I have no illusions that the gas companies are putting in superior injector cleaners to reduce the gas consumption of their retail customers - time to get real.

The more frequently lies are put out in the ether the more gullible people will believe them to be factual.

I've never worried about it, I get the fuel that's called for and that's it...

Last time I put a fuel injector cleaner additive in my tank that I purchased at a gas station my truck ended up in the shop with a misfiring engine and they had to pump out the gas and put in new gas to fix it. Never again! ? That was at ~ 100k miles and now it has 226k miles and runs very well. Just do your regular maintenance and use good qaulity gas and it will be fine.

In my opinion all those additives are a waste of money.
