Okay.. where to Begin.


As many know it’s hard Searching these Forums to get fitment information for wheels, tires, and suspension. It’s so annoying in fact that I’m compelled to tell you all about my truck and my process in great detail.



What I Started with:

2023 F150 3.5L V6 Powerboost, Trim level: Platinum, Black appearance package, FX4, and stock 20” wheels (275/60R20) Every bell and whistle that adds weight was added, meaning this truck has most likely the highest GVWR of F150s of this year.



SUSPENSION:

Wanted a lifelong upgrade for the truck so I went with the Fox 2.5 Performance Series (as it’s rebuildable). For My Powerboost owning friends, if you dig into the installation guide for these shocks you’ll see A note to add 0.3” of pre-load to achieve only 1.8” of lift on the front for 4x4. And 0.4” for 4x2. I talked to fox to verify some Information. The salesman told me that those numbers are based off the highest GVWR F150, such as mine, and that if your trucks spec is lighter you’ll get more then that, and those should be MINIMUM values. Regardless he said not to do more than 0.5” and a 0.4” preload would be acceptable for the my truck if I wanted. I had a local shop adjust the pre-load off the truck for around $130. (Spoiler: All said and done the suspension has added about /1.90”-2.1” of level on my heavy truck). I also kept stock UCA’s.



WHEELS/TIRES:

I wanted a big tire upgrade, not only bigger, but better. Stock tires are listed as 33’s”.



They measure 32.8”x11.2”.



I wanted bigger and wider. So I went with the Falken WildPeak AT4W in 295/70R18, tire choice was because I live in a very snowy area in the mountains, but still off-road in the summer and fall. They Measure 34.3”x12.2”, So total, 1.5” more diameter and 1” wider!



For wheels I went with the Method MR318 +40MM Offset. Went to small diameter for off-roading over the stock 20” wheels. The backspacing is 6.27” as opposed to the 6.5” stock OEM wheels.



So do they fit? Yes. There is no rubbing at full wheel deflection in the well, or the crash bars. No trimming, No Rubbing! However… at full full deflection and hold on the steering-wheel there is some rubbing on something on What I’m suspecting to be the UCA. But it’s just kissing the wheel lugs.. maybe. No marks on the wheels lugs through. Might add a 0.25” spacer on the wheels.



Spacing on the tire and UCA is maybe 4mm. It’s tight. The other thing I didn’t think about was spacing on the break caliper to the wheel with the decreased backspacing. There is maybe 3mm of spacing between the wheel and the caliper. But it works and there is no rubbing.



So overall what did we end up with.



Purchased:

FOX 2.5 Performance Series Coil Overs and Rear Shocks

Falken WildPeak AT4W 295/70R18

Method MR318 +40MM offset (from custom offsets)



Results, roughly ≈2.7 of lift on the front end, about 0.7” from the tires (with compression) and about 2.0” from the suspension. The number vary a little every-time I measure. But my lowest measurement at 2.475” and highest at 2.8”, but they trend towards the higher side. But I also maybe had my initial measurement of wheel well height at 37.4”off. Measurement between the front and back on the rake is about 0.375” difference. So it’s basically leveled.



PERFORMANCE:

The shocks dominate the bumps. Rides a little stiffer on road, but the truck is planted, and feels way more controllable and responsive. No body roll in turns any more on road, and eats the bigger potholes. Off-road and driving fast, jumping cattle guards, hitting big puddles, washboard roads, pots, bumps, and rocks it eats everything up. In combo with the Wildpeaks the truck handles amazing and doesn’t bounce or buck at all. Huge performance improvement over FX4.



Anyways, that’s all I got. Hopefully this was helpful

Looks good! Your rubbing might be the rubber attached to the wheel well liner at the front. I keep forgetting to take a pic of it but w/out the tire it's here. 4mm Is pretty close to the UCA, I'd keep an eye on it for witness marks.

I don’t think it’s that, only because I had a buddy walk along side the vehicle and watch the contact points. He could not see anywhere the tire was maybe touching. And at full lock looking under the vehicles there is plenty of space between well and tire. Which leads-me to think UCA, because it’s the only other tight tolerance and grow tighter in the turn. But again only at full full lock. And kissing the lugs maybe. But whatever it is we can visually see it on the ground, and obviously can’t get in there while driving.

It’s still pretty new to me so the results aren’t quite In. But at least the live mileage is seeming very similar. I live fairly rural so my average speed is usually in excess of 45 mph. Definitely hurts me when I’m driving in stop and go. But I think because of the heavier weight, and higher rotational momentum (and inertia) then engine actually runs at a slightly lower RPM since the tire naturally wants to resist the change. So I’ve actually seen my truck kicking into electric at higher than normal speeds because I think once at speed it doesn’t have to work as hard to keep it there. That said more breaks have to be used to stop it. But that’s my understanding of the physics. I also have the 3.73 gear ratio.

Gotcha. How do you like the fox shocks compared to the fx4? I've been thinking of swapping, but after driving an stx I realized the fx4 shocks are actually great when going fast over speedbumps and potholes LOL. (maybe I'll wait for a powerboost to do the mods, undecided yet)

Mentioned in my original post, but I’ll expound. The original FX4 ride was very elastic in my experience. What I mean by that is when you’d hit a big potholes or bump there wasn’t a lot of jar but then the truck would buck around and kinda bounce a bit until the suspension dissipates the energy. The Fox 2.5 PS with the DSC adjuster, is generally a little stiffer on road. The smaller little vibrations and bumps you feel maybe a little more because of the slightly stiffer ride. But once you start charging potholes, bumps, and rocks it’s a night and day difference. It absorbs the impact better, and then the ride smooths back out nearly immediately. No bucking around, no loss of traction (especially if ripping around on the back roads). The truck stays absolutely planted on the ground, and is extremely stable.
Also after adjusting the low speed compression with the low speed knob. I’ve nearly illuminated body roll, the front end dive when rapid breaking, and rear squating during rapid acceleration.

That's great. I like a stiffer ride but don't want to sacrifice the ability to speed over bumps. Basically the reason I wanted a raptor :p

Okay, well I was just letting you know where a known contact point for wheels/tires of your size and height is. Tire touching the UCA would be very muted dull sound and would be felt in the steering more than heard. It'd also begin to polish the UCA where it contacts and would be visible in the opposite lock on the UCA itself. Where it rubs on the rubber attached to the wheel well will take quite a bit of time to show up on it but will eventually begin to change shape and you can feel it.

That's great. I like a stiffer ride but don't want to sacrifice the ability to speed over bumps. Basically the reason I wanted a raptor :p
The Raptors runs Fox 3.0s. So essentially this is Just Raptor Light. It ain’t a raptor but it’s pretty close.

Nice setup, your tires might be making contact with the coilover hose running along the frame rail to the reservoir. I know a couple of guys with the +34 raptor wheels that had the same problem when turning hard over.
