Specifically going to try and tackle the mirror caps and side badges over thanksgiving. How many cans of color and clear do y’all think will be needed? What products do y’all recommend? I am for sure using 2k clear but don’t know what to use for primer and adhesion promoter.

I was going to order paint from here. Should I tackle it myself or shell out the money? Thanks guys!

Buy the factory primed ones. They are less than the effort you will put into smoothing those out.

Do you have part #’s? Thanks, didn’t know you could buy primer ones, only knew about chrome and textured plastic!

Haven't started yet, but material procured.

Parts number, mirror caps (Tasca):

ML3Z-17D742-DAPTM
Mirror Cover
$44.63

$44.63
ML3Z-17D743-DAPTM
Mirror Cover
$44.63

$44.63

The mirror caps are black, possibly primed. The show finish is different than inside surface. The door handle covers I ordered are a different color (dark grey) which I assume to be preprimed. Either way, plan to abrade and prime.

Great information on F150 Forum @21RRF150 for painting plastics/chrome: LINK

Ordered color match rattle can top coat and 2k clear from TouchupDirect. Bulldog Adhesion Promoter and 2K Epoxy Primer from Amazon.

Thanks, did you just get one can of each?
For both mirror caps and 4 handle covers I bought two cans of top coat and two cans of clear. 400 grit paper, red scotchbrite pads, and tack cloths.

I need to order a set of caps to do this for mine but was not sure which ones to get. Looks like these are the same for mine. Thanks for posting the part numbers. (y)

I haven’t sprayed yet. Unless you mess up multiple times, I’d think you be good with two can for just the mirrors. TouchupDirect took 10 days order to door. Better to have extra - reading the TDS on some of these products, you may need to re scuff the surface if not completed (primer through clear) in a reasonable amount of time. Just read the sheets for what you buy: “apply additional coats within X amount of time” or “topcoat or clear within X if previous coat”. Have whatever you need plus some.

Would the products your using change if painting plastic? The epoxy primer seams out of place? Thanks
I am painting plastic.
My understanding in talking to my body shop (currently painting my grille) and reading up on forum members in the industry (mentioned above) is epoxy is the best choice for things that take a beating. If you have scales, HVLP, etc. you can take a more professional approach : buy individual products for sealing, bonding, priming, flex aid, hardener, the list goes one. I'm going with epoxy as I understood it to be superior in sealing porous/nonporous surfaces and providing a substraight for subsequent coats to bond to. I could be wrong.

That sounds about right. I was quoted $600 which included mirrors, door handles, fender emblems, chrome strips bottom of all 4 windows, and the chrome strip on running boards. I didn't like the idea wrapping mirrors with all the commuting I do. A coat of wax or sealant after a wash and bugs come off pretty easy. I don't have experience with vinyl wrap, but the temporary nature questioned how long it would hold up for mirrors.

No, not at all. If you're not experienced with painting this sort of stuff, I'd recommend practicing on a small part first. There are a ton of videos out there to get pointers from.

You also may want to get some 1-2K wet sand paper and glazing compound. that way you can wet sand it after paint but before clear to smooth out the orange peel. Then apply the clear and hit it with the glaze to get it glass smooth.
