One thing that gets lost in all the bullet points is the work surface tailgate is automatically powered in lariat and up, versus manual in XL/XLT. Other oddity is the wireless charger pad is only king ranch and up.

I believe they added wireless charging to lower models now. The 21 Tremor 402a I looked at didn’t have it, but the 22 402a I ordered has it listed.

Power tailgate: Not sure it is standard, you have to get the Bed Utility package for the powered tailgate. You then also get BED lights, step and boxlink

wireless charger: also included in my lariat '22 DORA as $0. Do not think it is from KR and up.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

(Funny how we all have to speculate given that Ford cannot update their damn build site) Imagine if you were ordering a F150 now and you had no idea about this forum or the order guides, and you just relied on your local sleaseman........I mean salesman. You will likely be in for one hell of a surprise.

I can't give you an overview but I can tell you I stepped up to a Lariat 502A because it's the lowest level with a heated steering wheel which can't be ordered as a separate add on. Sometimes it's as simple as that, you are locked in to a minimum model and option package to get one thing you really want/need.
Its shitty that Ford doesnt offer the heated steering wheel in lower trims....its the only option I really miss in my loaded XLT.
In the end I couldnt justify the price jump of 8k here for the heated steering wheel.

I know in the last gen models, the steering wheel material was different between trims. I had an STX with that plastic steering wheel and center armrest and bought a Platinum steering wheel and armrest off of eBay and installed those. Made a world of difference, but those are just some minor things that, like you sorta stated, you can do down the road.

I have a 2021 Lariat 500A now, and I’ll say I like the steering wheel in it better than the last gen Platinum I had. I’d suggest going and looking at some and sitting in them just to see what feels right/best or that you could stand to live with until you do your own upgrades.
I’ve always had a similar thought process in doing upgrades down the road. I’ve come to realize with these newer vehicles, that’s getting harder and harder to do. When I got mine, my “must haves” were the seat memory and the “get skinny” button for the mirrors. The heated and cooled seats were a nice bonus I didn’t know I would be getting going in to looking at it.

I feel the 500A is a bargain (at least mine anyway) because I have paint matched mirrors, door handles, and all the previously stated stuff. I’ve always hated chrome or those ABS mirrors and handles. I’ve never cared about sun/moon roofs either because I grew up in “tornado alley” and hail storms were very common, although in New Mexico we don’t have them as often. Lol.

I agree with you. I really, really wanted leather but could not justify the huge price jump so I went with the xlt 302a and wasn't disappointed. Just can't put my dog in my truck cause he sheds like crazy!

FWIW .... I was shopping a 2022 Supercab 4x4 with 6.5ft box and 3.5 ecoboost for the primary purpose of towing my 21ft 5th wheel RV ...

A properly equipped XLT 302A met all of my "must have" requirements

A Lariat 500A offered everything on the XLT 302A (plus a few bells and whistles that weren't of big consequence in my decision) BUT
  • The Lariat Bed Utility Package includes the fully-powered tailgate (not available on the XLT); not on my "must-have" list but a great convenience for me because the tailgate must be lowered and raised when hitching / unhitching my 5th wheel (a big 'plus' for me)
  • The Lariat with my preferred bucket seats moves the shifter from the column to the console (a small 'minus' in my book)
The bottom-line (Granger Ford) price for the Lariat 500A with the fully-powered tailgate was $1701 more than the XLT 302A, all other things being equal.

Balancing the pros-and-cons, I ordered the Lariat 500A as my best choice for my long-term enjoyment (spec attached FYI, and the Granger Ford quotes I compared were below the respective Invoice Prices).

My point being that it takes careful scrutiny of the Build Guide to fully understand the differences between the two, and then hard $ numbers from a dealer willing to run comparative quotes to decide if the differences are 'worth it' for you (kudos and thanks to Chip at Granger for patiently supporting me in that effort).

Everyone's list of priorities will differ, your final trim-level choice might be different from anyone else's for your own good reasons.

Just for your consideration, Have Fun!

Biggest thing that sold me on a platinum over a lariat is the massaging seats - that was worth the upgrade for me.

I gotta say it's a bit bargain basement, but i ordered mine with the 301A package to save a couple of bucks and it's fantastic. Leather wrapped wheel, nice climate control, 8" screen is big enough for me (sometimes i even turn it off), good sound system. heres a pic

i went and spent a bit extra on some convenience things for myself, good tonneau cover, tailgate step, 5.0L V8, 4x4, side step bars

just food for thought, i paid 43 grand USD for the truck out the door including taxes and everything!!

XLT is highest trim level for the Heavy Duty Payload Package.
I really wish the heavy duty payload package was added in higher trims, having a powerboost you really need something to add back the weight rating lost to battery and high output electric components. It would be nice to have all the tech and the payload of the work truck trims.

Yeah that's what I'm talking about. Same with heated rear seats - you have those right? And you have to get 502A to get them its not stand alone?

I'm just wondering what I'll miss if I go 502A over 601A. having a hard time figuring that from the order guide

Not sure how much it costs on the 2022, but leather seats were something I wanted. Did not care much about the cooled seats, heated stearing wheel, memory seat positioning, power folding mirrors, or blue cruise (primarily because who knows when it will come out, or how well it will work) and the xlt with the 302a high package basically drives itself with lane assistance. Don’t get me wrong, I understand why people would want these things, just weren’t a big deal for me.

You can get katskins put in between 1200 to 2000 depending on who you go to. Which is what I found and it’s cheaper than the $5000 upgrade to lariat.

mall personal preference obviously.
I got the high 302A and had katskins leather installed. Saved $4k.

100% the route I will be taking. Again I fully understand people wanting those other features, but for me the leather seats were the biggest thing, and having the katskins was my deciding factor.

Also, like the all-black interior way better.
