VTA Mod on a 2.7L EcoBoost

I just discovered this was even a thing a few days ago. I ordered the plug from Amazon for $11.99 and I must say, I'm impressed with the increased turbo noise. I know this truck isn't a performance vehicle or terribly fast, but man I love that noise. And I sure wasn't about to spend about $400 for some blow off valve. Color me impressed for a few bucks. You can remove the whole hose too, and you can even cover it with a rubber cover for the bottom of a chair leg or something similar (but that's slightly less neat).

I have always wondered if these kinds of things can be more harmful than good just for a little sound added. Dont get me wrong, I like these kinds of mods and did all sorts of performance enhancements to my twin turbo Stinger.

Not sure if applicable, here - but on other turbo vehicles I've had, venting to atmosphere slightly messed with AFRs at times because the ECU wasn't accounting for the loss of airflow and would run rich for a moment. Whether it matters or not, ??‍

That is something to consider. I had a BOV on my 2.0T Audi and it also sounded cool, but I'm convinced that it suffered slightly less performance due to the charge being lost to atmosphere vs. keeping a 'head' through the ductwork and intercooler. It seemed to have an ever so slight lag to get back on boost.

I wonder the same. According to my butt dyno I don’t feel anything different. I’m going to keep an eye on my gas mileage, as that’ll probably be the number one indicator of any change to me.

yeah its a recir design. most new turbo vehicles are done this way. others in the thread have touched on it.
it will mess up your Air/Fuel ratio b/c the truck is designed for that air to recir back into the intake. also, it'll probably insignificant, but that recir air also aids with keeping the turbo spooled so maybe a tiny bit of turbo lag. its cool and all, i get it but it is probably more detrimental than good.

but its your truck and its $12 sooo to each their own as they say haha

Ran 95k miles on my ethanol tuned 15' 3.5 with the vta mod.. zero performance differences.. just added sound..

So far so good. I’m still getting about 21 mpg in around town driving. I’ve only gone through about 1/4 tank as I don’t drive that much. I’ll keep an eye on it.

I've had mine on my '21 truck since I bought it 45,000 miles ago. I too LOVE the noise.
Give me a super quiet exhaust, I want to hear the turbos spool and the BOV.

Edit after reading all the replies, the releasing of the boost pressure back into the (pre-turbos) intake piping will go somewhere - where do you think it goes? If the pressure is higher than the vacuum drawn by the engine, that air will flow back out through the air filter. Like for one second or less. I would expect our EcoBoost motors to use manifold air pressure (MAP) sensors for fuel, and I can't imagine any scenario where the fuel consumption would be altered by this modification. Disclaimer: I am not an engineer.

This is all correct. It’s actually a net performance decrease.

I feel it's a gimmicky item that people will buy in hopes for some kind of gain that will never happen.
I rather buy a 12 er

Had it installed a few months. Enjoyed the sound (been there, done the loud exhaust on my previous 5.0s) and loud discharge upon initial spool when getting up past 3k rpm when building boost No smell indicating running rich, unless you got a sensitive foot & ass I didn't feel much lag in building boost BUT did see a slight dip in mpgs cause I enjoyed romping on it to build boost just to here the venting while in traffic. Reinstalled the pipe and went back to stealth mode. It's a cool thrill mod to put a smile on your face and I get a kick when venting next to all the JDMs and Yotas around island. Never bought this expecting gains.
