Sorry, this is probably a dumb question but I can't seem to find a solid answer anywhere.

I have a 2021 F-150 Lariat with the max tow package. I'm getting ready to buy a boat and it's dry weight + trailer is over 5000 pounds. I assume I need to upgrade my Class IV hitch? From what I can see, it only has a 5000 pound rating even though my truck is rated for 14K.

You really should read the manual and the towing specifications for the vehicle.

But no, so long as you're using a weight distribution hitch, you can tow more than 5000 lbs...

Right, I've read that - was just looking for confirmation since there are some guides I've read that say Class IV receivers can go up to 10,000 pounds (but didn't list factors).

Most boat trailers aren't weight-distributing so it looks like I'll need to upgrade.

You should have a sticker like this one under your hitch.
