Here's an option to clean off the tire grime from previous tire shine coatings (comes in smaller containers, but couldn't locate link). I spray it on the tire, let it sit, then use a brush to scrub and then spray off with a hose. It's a 1 step process everyime, which is a huge time saver. Works great on rupper floor mats, too.The technology has come a long way. The best all-around product line I've used which is now going on 11 years, is TuffShine.
Their brush and tire concentrate cleaner is incredible. Usually takes four or more applications to get the suds to be white signaling the tire is clear of any build up. This is where most people go wrong because they trap the brown underneath with all of the old coatings that they don't get off.
Once clean, I apply the coating and I typically find three coatings is sufficient for me. A much more mature and subdued gloss. No grease, doesn't attract dirt etc. I usually only have to do it a couple times a year or so.
