I have a 2023 F150 STX and am getting ready to add a DC to DC converter and a 12,000 winch. I was reading that a BIG 3 upgrade may be necessary-but I can't find anyone who has actually done it and thinks it was a great idea- I was thinking of using 2ga wire but NOT replacing the factory wire just adding the thicker wire if that even makes sense. Any ideas or suggestions- has anyone done it? Thanks in advance.

Back in my import tuner days with fancy stereos people did this all the time. Can honestly say I have not heard about doing this in years.

I used to put a winch on my trucks and then realized that 100% of the time I used the winch to pull someone out of trouble who had the wrong tires and no sense. One fellow I recovered twice and left the area when he got stuck a third time.

I just saw this and was wondering if it was necessary and with this new of a truck I really don't see the point- and seeing not too many responses nobody else does either

I suspect that we don't see much discussion of the traditional big-3 wire gauge upgrade ....
  • alternator-to-battery
  • negative-ground-to-battery
  • battery-to-block
.... because it would be of very marginal benefit given the charging-output controls and constraints of our modern systems. But I can't envision any harm in doing it.

Methinks that adequately rated circuit protection and cable-gauge configured 'direct-between-load-and-battery' (but always through the BMS module) is the best one can do for high-current loads on these vehicles.

Thanks- This is my first new truck since 1980 and man it's quite a learning curve. At 70 I hope I still have time left to get'er dun lol. Yeah I think I'll just skip the Big Three- I can't even see the alternator from the battery lol.
