Tailgate No open on first push of button

Hello all

Just a quick one but I'm finding my tailgate is acting a little weird, either that or I need to change some settings...

If the truck is unlocked and I walk up without my key and press the button, the tailgate from time just flat out won't open and I have to go get the key and use the fob to activate it...

Most other times whether the truck is locked or open, if I have my key there is a long beep on pressing the button and nothing happens until I press it again and then it opens....

anyone have any thoughts?

You have to push the button twice, even if it's unlocked. Same as from inside the cab.

Na, some lawyers and engineers at Ford decided the fix to spotaneously opening tailgates was to make it required that you push the button twice, just to make sure you really wanted to open the tailgate. OP was only pushing the button once.

If the truck is unlocked you don't need the keyfob to open the tailgate. If the truck is locked, keyfob nearby is required. Both situations require you press the button twice.

Mine will open if i am standing next to it while locked and fob on me. I kid you not.

Have you gotten the update/recall done? when I got mine I got an addendum for the owners manual now explaining its two taps within 3 seconds to open it.

When I was updating software myself, one of the updates telling me to inform the customer of the change in behavior for opening the tailgate. So, it was definitely intentional. I’m not 100% sure, but I want to think you can change it back to 1 press in FDRS. I just don’t have access now to double check that.

If you double click too fast with either fob or button, it fails to register. Awful design that hardly ever works reliably. Im unaware of any other manufacturer throwing out a double click solution to opening the tailgate. Easily the worst feature of this vehicle.

Strange but my 21 KR tailgate still unlocks inside the truck with only one push of the tailgate button. And yes if you have the key on you , you can unlock it with the tailgate button and not push on the key fob.

My 21 XLT had an OTA that installed the double tap to open. Then with another OTA or update with FDRS, the double tap reverted back to a single press. I don't remember which one did change it back to a single press.

i believe you’re referring to the physical button inside the cab.

The double tap, I found was with all 3 switches. Fob, Inside and Tailgate buttons.

I believe there is a proximity sensor on the truck that detects the key near it, so you don't have to unlock the truck to open the tailgate. If I have my keys in my pocket and walk past my locked truck, I can hear something click and zone lighting comes on briefly. I can open my tailgate with 2 pushed when that happens. If my keys aren't on my person, everything stays locked.

Long story long, experiment with and without the keys nearby.
