Looking to see if I can get assistance verifying if I have any updates that I’m missing. I recently changed some settings with Forscan, but it doesn’t appear that the splash screen is updating for me, no matter how many times I reset the APIM.

Ford customer care says my Sync is fully up to date, but I don’t have any of the features that I’m seeing on other posts, such as full screen Apple Car Play, Home Screen button, etc. I’m wondering if my version is outdated and that’s why I can’t get the splash screen to change?

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum!
Your truck is a little bit behind on updates, the good thing is that your truck isn't stuck there though.

If you will PM @rugedraw with your VIN he will be able to provide you with additional details about your current software. If you haven't PM'ed on the forum yet, you can simply click on his account and select PM or private message. Good luck!

Thanks! I sent him a PM. Odd that it seems like my version is quite a ways behind, yet Ford customer care was adamant that I have the latest version with no pending updates.

Well, yes "technically their correct" ? you don't have any pending OTA's to install but that doesn't mean your on the current version of Sync. Ford customer service isn't really very knowledgeable and simply tells you what you want to hear.

Yeah, I gave up after the second time reiterating to them that after searching dozens of forums, I am very clearly not on the latest version, just for them to tell me that not every vehicle gets the same updates. ??‍♂ figured I was better off posting here.

If I'm counting right, you are either 5 or 6 versions behind on the APIM module.
And note that it will take that many GWM and TCU updates in order for the APIM updates to become available.
About 2.5 years worth of APIM releases.

All doable though!

So how do I go about doing those? Anyway to do them myself or does this require leaving my truck at a dealership for long periods of time?

Additionally is there any particular reason why I never got these via OTA updates? Or just bad luck like I’ve been reading.

Funny you should ask. ?

You are surrounded by fellas that have overcome the same obstacles.

Appreciate your help. After reading the first few pages, it looks like GWM, TCU, and APIM updates can be done via a USB, along with a FDRS license, correct? Or do I need that VCI cable? Is that any different than the OBD to USB cable I use for Forscan? Not looking to drop $600 on the linked Mongoose cable.

Nobody likes forking over for the Mongoose. But it is the necessary device for FDRS to get a scan of the truck. But you are right that after the scan, the APIM, GWM and and TCU modules are USB storage based.

But I assure you that if your truck is that many years behind, there's going to be 20-30 (or more) updates you will want to do. There are a lot of refinements all across the vehicle since it was released. Especially a 2021/2022

The dealer will not install updates on your truck unless it can be associated with a problem that requires a particular module to be updated. You wont be able to pay them to do updates either the trucks also out of warranty. You'll have to do this on your own.

You'll need at minimum.
1 windows 10 or 11 laptop
2 "mongoose" cable and it's the only approved cable by Ford for use with FDRS.
3 a power supply maintainer
4 USB stick. Preferably with both USB A and USB c
5 FDRS license
6 about 20 hours of time to make all of the updates to bring your truck to the current level.

Oof, that’s a tough pill to swallow. I appreciate the info though… guess I’ll throw it on the Amazon wish list and get it eventually. Seems so ass backwards that the updates weren’t installing OTA, and now I need to fork over nearly a grand to get it all updated properly.

Then again, even while my truck was under warranty, my battery continued to drain and was confirmed by the dealership 3 times that my battery was defective, yet it wasn’t throwing any codes on their reader so they wouldn’t replace it for me…

Just so you know, you are also surrounded by fellas that felt exactly like you do right now.

No pressure. It's not like the truck is undrivable. It's just stale. It'll wait.

The battery problem most likely caused many ota's that had been sent to fail, I'd start with changing out that battery for a new h7 or h8 agm. You will eventually get ota's that will begin to catch you up but it will be a long time before your completely up to date if ever.

rugedraw Runs a loaner program for mongoose cables, you can get on his list and eventually he'll be able to send you one. I realize that's a big expense to purchase outright but, think of this, a replacement led headlight for that Lariat is almost $2800.00 should you break one. That makes the mongoose look like a deal! ;)

don’t forget Amazon has a great return policy and if you complete everything within 30 days you’ll get your money back for the cable

Just a thought. That’s what I’m doing lol use their system to our advantage ??‍♂

Yeah, I wound up replacing the battery out of pocket. It was just annoying that a not even 2 year old truck (at the time) needed a new battery and Ford acknowledged there was clearly something wrong with the battery, but since it wouldn’t throw a code, they couldn’t replace it under warranty.

Good to know about the loaner program - I’ll look into that.

Luckily, the only things I’ve had to replace on this truck after 3+ years is wipers, a battery, and a cabin filter. Fingers crossed nothing else big pops up for a while.
