Recirculating air button disengages after a few minutes

When the A/C is used, the recirculating air button stays engaged. When the A/C is off, the recirculating disengages after a few minutes. Can this be programmed to stay on when engaged?

The climate control system just does what it wants.

I stuck one of those little felt furniture sliders on the recirc button (leaving the indicator light visible) so I can find it by feel when I drive through wood smoke or a truck is blowing diesel soot.
