Too much rain in southwest this last year. What do you folks do in rain for cooking area. Working on solutions for cooking off tailgate. This Walmart 12x10 OT canopy fits nice. Lowest setting covers tailgate $123. Doesn't hit truck. Has guy lines and vents for wind. I sprayed with Scothcgaurd Outdoor water shield. It is big so may get small Kelty tarp as light option. Can fit a couple rigs around it. Can run propane fire can or firepit under it with chairs. Have 1 wall with pockets too. We shall see. I only bring canopy if we expect rain. I have bed cover, no bed rack (yet).
Update: Kelty Backroads shelter, perfect for overlanding. Lots of rain on Death Valley trip, perfect solution. Saw Lake Manly in Badwater Basin.

I have one but it takes too much room for part time Nomading for my liking. I'm using a tarp and tying it to trees, the truck, or trekking poles. A simple tarp has many uses and using it for camping is one of them.

Love the pictures and your adventurous spirit.

Yes I have tarps, kit, trekking poles. etc. I'm still not good at tarp setups. PITA to me. Not many trees in the desert too. Works in Sierras and southern Utah. My buddy uses a Kelty Waypoint tarp in the other pic on his Cherokee, comes with a pole. Nice. They have some other nice systems too. I looked at rightline and others specifically for truck tailgate but don't seem robust and attach to the rig. I have room but only bring canopy when we expect rain. Mostly so I can make coffee, Pancakes etc on the tailgate in the rain instead of vestibule. And to offer some shelter to other folks in the group. Borrego , Mojave, Death Valley usually no rain but when it does there's usually wind gusts so I want something low, vented, that can take multiple guy lines and hopefully hold up. And not cost thousands to replace. The truck awnings Ive seen are too expensive for my liking. LOL Also some times we base camp and go wheeling during the day so I don't want anything attached to the rig. On our snow runs my other buddy bring a big Gazelle 6 sided gazebo that we all share for cooking. Just curious what other people are using for cooking in the rain. Cuz seems we've had a lot more rain than usual this year. Worst case I can put my raincoat on and still make coffee. LOL
