I realize there are several gens between them but comparing what I might have felt about my 01 F150 and this one, re towing, is not a good comparison. This truck is heavier, with near to twice the power, better brakes and on paper, near twice the towing capacity, while having similar payloads.
I towed lighter, shorter and lot less wind sensitive loads with it, than I do with this one and this one is far better.
In fact, I loved that truck but I knew it wouldn't do well, what I wanted to do, which is tow our current camper. 7500lbs, 30' long, 8' W, 11'-4" tall, across the Rockies and back.
The old 4.6L NA would have been screaming in the slow lane up the mountains and had no automatic engine / transmission braking. Locking out overdrive, was the closest thing to tow haul it had.

The old 4.6 was so bad that I could barely tow a 5,000lb bay boat home from Rockport to Dallas. In my 2002 had the accelerator floored, literally, the entire way on IH 35. I could never get above 60 mph. Gas mileage was horrendous. It was probably around 8 mpg. The good news was we got to refill our drinks every 30 minutes or so. That truck was red with the silver bottom. From a looks perspective I loved it.
I finally bought a 2014 XLT that had all the options available, including leather, optional headlights, and more with a 5.0 360 hp. Dealer took it in a dealer trade. I was going to die with that truck. Turned out I totaled it, so the truck died and not me.
That was when I ordered my 2023 XLT 5.0. I was going to die still owning that one. Another gentleman had a different agenda. So it was totaled and I survived.
So I bought my 2021 Lariat used (can I still use that word?). Another attempt at me dying still driving the truck before someone else nails me. We will see how far this one goes.
