I see typically -20ºF with -30ºF common in Western Wyoming. Some old timers have told stories of -60ºF. A state trooper I know spoke of one time with those temperatures when he was told to leave his cruiser idling 24/7 and to not shut it off because of those temperatures. As to 0W-30, If you reflect on the oil's viscosity at moderate temperatures it's on the order of 30 weight. And remember that on the cold end the 0W weight is still thicker than at higher temps. That 0W rating simply means that at low temps it is lower than higher oils, but that is still thicker than it'll be when warmed up. I run 0W-30 year round, partly because oil changes are far enough apart that I'll likely hit wintertime no matter when I change oil.Ok, I see the owners manual recommends 0w-30 for colder than -30F. This will be my first winter in Montana, I’ll see just how cold it will get and go from there.
Guess it wouldn’t hurt to use 0w-30 on the last oil change right before the colder part of the year then switch back to 5w-30?
