I’m going to order a truck to put a Whipple on but can’t decide between 2X4 or 4X4. Don’t plan on racing it other than the occasional stoplight race, just a fun semi daily. My first thought is 2X4 so there are less parts in the drive line but it seems like everyone is going the 4X4 route. I understand the launch benefit but is there something else I’m not considering? Planning on the Whipple Gen 6 Stage 1R. Please give me your thoughts and reasons behind them. Thanks!

If it were me, I'd get the 4x4, especially if you're adding a Whipple. 4x4 launches are said to be incredible and having owned a 2004 Lightning, getting traction is the only downfall of having a SC. Not sure where in OK you are, but I was stationed in Enid for 5 yrs and Wichita Falls TX for 8, so I know y'all can and do get some snow and/or ice and the 4x4 makes driving much less nerve-racking !!

That’s a good point, we’re in Weatherford so only about 60 miles from Enid. I’ll probably drive my other truck if the weather is bad like that but would still be nice to have the option I guess. I’m just not sure how much power that transfer case will handle, but it seems like everybody’s doing it so they must be OK.

Check out BoostedF150 on YouTube. It might help you decide, and his drag racing videos are great too !!

I’ll check him out. Thank you. And it looks like I’m going to order the exact truck you have. Lol.

I had a 03 lightning back in the day and loved it. Tires were ridiculously expensive for the time.

Fast forward to when I ordered my 22 rcsb and the only reason I went with 4x4 was because then you couldn't get the 3.73 gears unless it was 4x4. Now I see you can order 2 wheel drive with the 3.73 so for my use I'd be all over that. Less to break and for the launch tires have gotten better since 20 years ago and are even stickier.

I'm at the age where I don't feel the need to be out playing in the snow. When the weather gets bad I stay home. Also with the super traction tires some come with the warning not to operate below certain temperatures and you'd have to have a second set of tires for cold weather.

I thought the same thing on the gearing also, but when I build one, I see that the 373s are the only option for either 2 Wheel Dr. or four-wheel-drive so I guess that’s good

If you could get 4A with the 4x4, it might be a no-brainer but on the RCSB going with 4x4 is a $5K hit; which is totally a huge ripoff considering that you can get all the major drivetrain components at full MSRP for barely half that. Especially since so many people have had their front diffs grenade in reverse under normal conditions.

It does seem like a lot of money to add 4wd

Adding that kinda power, 4x4...2wd will get rolling burnouts, but will never get power to the ground.

Have you considered a low mileage used 21+, or are you set on havng a 24?

5k-ish for a 4x4 is a lot of money to spend so you can launch a brick harder a couple times a week.

3k for a 3/5 lowering kit and another $500 for traction bars is where I would put that 5k on a street truck.

Pretty well set on a 24. It’s a stupid reason, but I prefer the larger center console screen. And I have considered the lowering kit and traction bars as well but I thought if I get four-wheel-drive then I could always put a little lift on it and some 33s if I wanted to convert from street truck to off-road. The money isn’t really that big a deal, just want to make sure I don’t waste it and make the right decision the first time.

I guess one question is why not four-wheel-drive other than the money. I know it will add a little weight, but is the transfer case a week point in the drivetrain?

Try this:
Place both pictures in the same folder then flip back and forth using a photo app.

At this point, I'll probably go with whatever I can get. I missed the 24' order bank closing by 3 days and I'm sure the 25's will be more money. My dealer is looking for me one now. I've given them three colors (White, Carbonized Grey, or Silver) in either 2X4 or 4X4 so we'll see what they can come up with.
