I am strongly considering getting an OBDII tool, but my primary interest isn't in using it as a scan tool, but rather as a means to display additional gauges (PIDs). That's not to say that at some point I won't maybe be interested in exploring all of the potential and possibilities that the scan tool makes available, but it isn't my immediate goal - getting the additional gauges is my primary interest.

So, that being the case, should I go the OBDLINK M+ route, or Veepeak? The M+ strikes me as being pretty sophisticated, and has a load of features that I will likely never use. On the other hand, the Veepeak tool is considerably less expensive, and appears to be able to satisfy my primary needs and I think will likely also be quite adequate for additional duties down the road.

Thoughts?

OBDLink MX+, because of the associated app and the Ford/Lincoln/Mercury PID library, is tough to beat.

Having said that, I don't know the VeePeak, so I can't really compare.

Those are good points, and the PDI library aspect is particularly good to know.

I've noticed in the MX+ instructions, there is a specific order of steps for installing the device. However, I didn't see any instructions for removing the device. Once installed, if I want to remove it, are there specific steps? Vehicle turned on, or off? Engine running, or does it matter?

I will second the OBDLink MX+ its more capable than the veepeak is

its really easy to set up download the OBDLink app, plug the device in ignition on or engine running (doesn't matter), go to settings in the app then click connection wizard and follow the steps. for removing it I think your talking about removing the adapter from the obd II port in the vehicle it can be plugged in or removed anytime engine on engine off it doesn't matter

Yes, you are correct - I was referring to removing the adapter. So, once it is set up, you can remove the adapter with the car turned on or off... interesting.... I was concerned about doing it properly because I have read of instances where someone did something wrong, and bricked the computer. It sounds like it must have been during setup. I'll admit that when I read that, it did give me pause.

well the safest way to remove will always be to disconnect from the app first, shut the vehicle off, then remove the adapter. The set up instruction are to start the engine first then plug in the adapter so you can plug it in at anytime. I have unplugged the adapter many times with the vehicle running, app not connected, with no issues. now that may be different if it was connected to your phone and you were viewing live data and you unplugged it.

I've been plugging and unplugging OBD adapters into my F150's for years. I have 3 different ones I use on my current truck, depending on what I am using for software.

Never has an issue.

I did brick a CCM module once with a questionable OBD adapter (VCX Nano) using FDRS software, but was able to recover the module easy enough with a much superior adapter. (Mongoose)

Monitoring PIDs is not writing to anything. Pretty low risk.

EXCELLENT information! I think you talked me down off of the ledge :giggle:. And it is sounding like spending the few extra $ for the OBDLINK is the way to go.

Thanks to all!

Can the OBDLINK be used to access the truck for forescan and/or FDRS, or is mongoose the only option? Thanks

Technically you could use the obdlink for forscan modification but not frds. even know the obdlink is capible of forscan mods i would not trust a wireless connection for any type programming. so yes the mongoose is your cheapest option or the ford vcm 3 that costs thousands of dollars.
