Howdy all,
I was wondering if it’s possible to add drive modes to my base 4x4, such as mud/ruts, sand/deep snow, and rock crawl modes.
I’ve looked around quite a bit and I cant find any info on this subject.
Is it possible to do this with forscan?
Or would I need a whole different module of some sort?

I fix software bugs!
I'm by no means an expert; I just have a lot of random marbles rolling around in my head. There are knowledgable members here that can fill in the technical blanks. The short answer is no, it can't be done with FORScan; it's not that simple. Those drive modes require a factory rear E-Locker, a transfer case control module (TCCM) that is supports those drive modes, and a dash switch with the rear E-Locker push button so you can manually activate it if you want to.

I did the opposite to your question :) I installed an Eaton TrueTrac LSD and wanted to deactivate those drive modes because I lost the E-Locker.

I hope this helps!

Forgive me if I’m wrong, but I believe those off road drive modes don’t do much other than activate things like 4H/4L and lockers. They’re not like on road drive modes (sport, eco, tow/haul) which are capable of changing throttle response and shift points.
Having previously owned a Bronco, I never touched the off road drive modes, instead just selected high or low range and lock the rear diff when needed. The drive modes are there for people with more novice skill levels when going off road (in my opinion) as they can just select the mode that most represents the surface they’re on and let the truck work out what to activate.

I’d disagree, the off road drive modes actually change the throttle response and shift points quite a bit. They generally make the throttle response much my snappy and hold a much lower gear. Do I need them? Hell no. I cut my teeth off road with older vehicles that were made before any vehicles had any kind of drive modes. But it would be cool to have all the modes, they do make life a little easier. It’s annoying having to hit a much of buttons and holding down the traction control button to get all the Nannie’s off. My 23 XLT work truck has all the drive modes, there pretty fun to use and pretty effective for their intended use.

Oh, interesting 🧐 Gosh, drive modes are based on your trim. I have a STX FX4 and it has all those drive modes including Rock Crawl.

I found this table:
Trim/PackageTypical Drive Modes Included
XL 4x4 (standard)Normal, Eco, Sport, Tow/Haul, Slippery, Deep Snow/Sand
FX4 Off-RoadNormal, Eco, Sport, Tow/Haul, Slippery, Deep Snow/Sand, Mud/Ruts, Rock Crawl

You can’t simply swap a module to add them, it’s tied to hardware, wiring, and calibration.

It is possible to add drive modes with FORScan; for example, I've added rock crawl to my non-FX4 KR. The ABS module is the main controller of initiating instructions for other modules to be set for operation in particular drive modes. Drive modes can alter throttle responsiveness, change shift points, turn on or off stability controls etc.

The forscan spread sheet lists the drive mode configuration addresses and values. The only way you will know if you have the proper module functionality in place is to enable drive modes that you do not have. A number of things can happen when you try this:
1. You may get an invalid configuration or a bunch of related DTCs
2. You may see no difference in operation as it may have configured successfully but effectively ignores the change due to module features not being available
3. Other unspecified and unexpected consequences.

interesting, so does rock crawl mode on you KR work how you think it’s supposed to?

Completely. Auto-selects 4L 2nd gear, all ESC systems off, de-sensitises throttle input etc. if you want to crawl even slower, select manual 1st gear.

I suppose that’s true, I forgot they also disable traction control which otherwise sucks holding the button down.
FWIW my RCSB has mud/ruts and rock crawl modes. Must be tied to the FX4 package.

For your truck, let's start with rock crawl to see if it's even possible. Steps in FORScan:
1. Go to module configuration, ABS module (asbuilt format)
2. Do a "Save All" to back up your original configuration.
3. Change the following:
760-04-01xxxxxx*xxx--
From 0 to 8.
4. Next to the group of 760-04 addresses, click "write" and follow the instructions. When it warns about an incorrect checksum, say "OK" (it will calculate the correct checksum).
5. The truck will wig out with all kinds of bing bongs and messages on the cluster; ignore them.
6. When your ignition is back on as per instructions, go to the DTC area and rescan DTCs; follow instructions. If the truck reports DTCs after turning on the ignition again, list them here via screenshots.
7. If there are no DTCs, repeat steps 1 and 2.
8. Try to select rock crawl using the drive modes knob. If that doesn't work, report back. If it does work, drive to a dirt (unsealed) area in normal mode and select rock crawl once there to properly test it.

If any step above don't make sense or produce unexpected results, report back.

Looks like the truck didn’t like that change.
since my truck is a 25 then It’s probably different from your 23. I don’t think it changed anything.

The setting I gave was correct for your truck, the module implementation doesn't like it. Was worth a try; change the value back to original if not already done.
