2021 F-150 King Ranch PowerBoost
I recently completed my first really long drive in my 2021 F-150 King Ranch Powerboost, 601A Equipment group with most other options. I live in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains in East Tennessee and traveled to a ranch in South Central Montana. The trip was two weeks in duration. I had three @700 mile drives up to this point. In and around town I have been routinely getting 25-26 MPG, besting the 24MPG EPA rating, however, on the Interstate the MPG is usually around 20.5 MPG. As I traveled further West the mileage decreased. Interstate speeds where I live and for about half the journey are 70MPH. Once in South Dakota the speed limit increases to 75 and eventually 80MPH. Most of Wyoming and Montana are 80MPH unless you are near one of the larger towns. Additionally, there is an obvious increase in elevation. (I live at 1250ft and the ranch was at 5800ft) Parts of Wyoming and Most of Montana (at least where I was) have 85 octane gas rather than 87 where I live. I did try a couple of tanks of 91 octane gas and did not notice any appreciable difference. Definitely not worth the extra money in my opinion.

I used the lane centering often once I was in Iowa, South Dakota, Wyoming and Montana. I only had a couple of problems in Wyoming where the lane markings were very faded. At one point the system seemed to jerk back and forth like it was trying to decide what to do or where the lane was. If you have the windows down and radio on you will likely not hear the warning to keep your hands on the wheel. Even with my hands on the wheel, the system did not always detect that and with the requisite warnings the brakes were applied. They have speed compensated volume on the radio but it does not apply to the warnings. The warnings do pop up in the display but I did not notice them. I will be happy once Blue Drive is released.

I had three instances where the main screen would black out sections and move them randomly around. The only way I could resolve this was to shut the vehicle off, open and close the door, and then restart the vehicle. I also had several instances where the Sync system would beep and change the display as if I had initiated a request. I was the only one in the truck and to the best of my recollection was not talking to myself so I don't think I activated the system with the "wakeup" word.

I have had the truck going on four months and now have over 10,000 miles on it. Overall I was very pleased with the way the truck drove and the comfort of the seats for such a long drive. I put on over 4200 miles and 67 hours of driving in two weeks. It averaged 18.6MPG which I was satisfied with. Montana was over 100 degrees for a good portion of the time I was out there. The air conditioning worked great. I had to turn it down on occasion as it seemed to get too cold in the truck. This led to one other issue I noted during the trip. With the windows down and the air conditioning off the compressor would turn on and start to cool the air. The screen showed the air conditioning was off. I have no idea why this would have occurred or how to prevent it from happening.

My overall impression is that the mechanical portions of the truck are sound but Ford still has some issues they need to resolve with Sync 4. All the problems I have experienced to date are related to the electronics. My wife and I also just took delivery of a 2021 Mustang Mach-e. She has been having some issues with Sync 4 also. It's a different version than in the F-150 but still Sync 4. Hopefully future software updates will resolve some of these issues!

I put 63,000 on my last truck in 2 years, it was a 2018 F150 2.7Ecoboost 2wd. Any time I drove faster than 68mph on the highway my fuel economy would dip:
  • @68mph highway trips 24.4mpg average
  • @75mph --> 22mpg
  • @78mph --> 19.5mpg
I would imagine that 80mph speed limit would be around 17-18mpg on the PowerBoost. Remember the hybrid does not change the aerodynamics of the truck just assists in fuel consumption around town and acceleration.

Wow, that's quite the trip, thanks for the write up!

Only have about 1K miles on mine, but have had similar, quirky issues with Sync 4 and the menus and all, while the mechanics seem to be spot on.

The current quirk that bothers me is that after I customize the gauges, they will often reset back to the stock settings. Doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason to it. There is also a slight lag when selecting things on the main screen, and I think the cameras should have higher resolution and a crisper picture. I had earlier versions of Sync in two Mustangs and they had similar issues as well.

My last 2 vehicles were FCA products and the "Uconnect" system is a bit better on the whole. More intuitive, snappy performance with no lag, fewer quirks, and better cameras. Uconnect isn't perfect either though. The version in my Charger would often shut down for no reason and kill the audio. Haven't had that problem with Sync yet...
