I have a new 2025 F-150 Lariat/SuperCrew/6.5' Bed/PowerBoost/Max Tow, and a 2023 Keystone Hideout 175BH camping trailer. I'm experiencing a problem where the F-150 either doesn't recognize the camping trailer when the 7-pin is plugged in, or does recognize it at first, and then loses it, resulting in a "Trailer disconnected" alert. Once the "Trailer disconnected" message appears, the trailer brake gain display doesn't show any brake amount being applied when the truck brakes are pressed. Sometimes the trailer comes back for a bit, in which case the gain display jumps back to life, and then the trailer disconnects again. Squeezing the manual brake controller does engage the trailer brakes (I can feel this when applied at speed), and also triggers another "Trailer disconnected" warning. There is an electrical buzz on the trailer brakes when applying the brakes to the truck while it thinks the trailer is disconnected, but it's difficult to know what intensity the trailer brakes are receiving since this test is performed while stopped.
Even more perplexing, despite the "Trailer disconnected" alert, the Truck is still very aware that the trailer is present while it reports the trailer is disconnected; Flipping on a turn signal triggers the side lane camera view on the main console, which does not happen when a trailer is disconnected. But the gain still displays nothing, and no trailer features (Pro Trailer Backup Assist) can be activated.
I've already brought the truck back to Ford after I first noticed the issue - thought I blew a tow package fuse or something. They say they've checked everything: no fuses were blown and everything is working in the truck - must be the trailer.
I've taken the trailer (with truck!) back to the trailer dealer. They say everything's fine with the trailer, must be something with the truck.
After a 300 mile trip this weekend, the F-150 is not seeing the trailer at all. It found it for a total of 8 seconds on our 150 mile return trip.
We used to tow the same trailer with a VW Atlas with a dedicated aftermarket brake controller - no issues.
I plugged the trailer into a neighbor's Ram - recognizes it immediately.
Plugged the trailer back into our F-150 right after testing the Ram - F-150 doesn't see it.
Only other thing I can think to do is take the trailer down to Ford and say "Pull up a bunch of trucks, and let's plug into all of em, see what happens."
Anyone else have similar issues... or better yet, any solves? It's obviously a safety concern, but also frustrating to just have each dealer point fingers at each other. And with the inconsistency given the fact that the truck does, sometimes, see the trailer, I have no idea who's right.
