I've seen issues in search, but not a complete install, so here's mine:
1. Before starting, make sure your garage door opener motor has external connections (for example a terminal block) for an external receiver +/- and power +/- (12V or 24V)
2. I purchased the following items. I have no affiliation with them but now I know for sure that these items work. They say you need to purchase the remote fob for learning, but I only did to be sure; I haven't tried it without the remote fob ?
I'm in Australia but there should be an equivalent to the above wherever you reside.
3. I used some spare power cable to wire up the power and receiver screw terminals at the HomeLink box and the push terminals on the motor. Make sure to extend your antenna wire for best range.
4. I performed the "learn" procedure for their remote fob without issue. At this stage I now have the HomeLink fob and the standard opener fob able to operate the motor.
5. I RTFM'ed the F-150 Owners' Manual HomeLink section. Programming the sun visor HomeLink button to the new HomeLink fob worked exactly the way they say it does using the first method. However, the manual then becomes vague and confusing. Luckily they refer to the HomeLink site where there is a proper explanatory video. Here, you learn that if your sun visor button flashes rapidly, you have a rolling-code opener (the box i purchased is one such) and even after programming your fob to the sun visor button, you still need to go back to the HomeLink device to complete the learning cycle. Watch the video, it explains all:
