No solution yet.

Objective: An adjustable bed rack overtop a functional hard folding tonneau cover.

Details: The Bed rack will only be installed a few times a year (e.g. 12’ kayaks on summer vacations, Thule cargo carrier for family visits) with the tonneau cover simultaneously installed to weather protect additional luggage, bags, etc. For the majority of the year, though, the adjustable bed racks won’t be installed; would like to utilize a hard tonneau cover that my wife can easily open and close.

Examples of Adjustable Bed Racks I’m interested in: Yakima OverHaul HD, Thule 500XTB Xsporter Pro, Overland Vehicle Systems Freedom Rack with Cross Bars and Side Supports.

Examples of Hard Folding Tonneau covers I’m interested in: BAKFlip MX4, LEER HF650, UnderCover ArmorFlex.

Unfortunately, none of these combinations are compatible with each other. The Tonneau’s listed above inhibit the rack mounting points.

The BAKFlip CS appears to be a viable solution, but it’s been discontinued. Other options include a sturdier tonneau, like the Renegade (looks awesome); however, I think this will be too heavy to open and close routinely - especially for my wife. Another alternative is to purchase the Retrax Pro XR Series with the integrated Trax Rail system that’s compatible with T-slot accessories; however, the retractable tonneau’s canister takes up additional bed space - which is already limited on a 5’7” bed.

Any suggestions?

Anyone use this setup?

Everyone gets concerned about the cannister on a retractable (I've had both, tri-fold and now Retrax).

The cannister is up in the air, so it does NOT prevent putting long wood, plywood sheets, suitcases, bricks, dirt, etc. in the bed. It's not like the installed tool boxes that take up floor to rail (and above).

Also on my tri-fold (and many of them) the last "panel" (ie. the 4th part closest to the cab) is the part that is attached to the rails. This prevents any bigger items (like a couch, or a dresser) from sitting all the way to the front of the bed.

So between my old tri-fold and current retractable the distance lost at the front of the bed (in the air) is about the same. Difference being the tri-fold still had the full 20" (approx) of floor to tonneau height under it, where the Retrax has about 10" from floor to bottom of cannister. That's the only difference.

So - take this for what it’s worth because I personally don’t have this set up - in fact my Bak revolver x4s is still in the shipping box in my garage waiting for my truck to get here - but the Thule TrackRack and a hard roller like the x4s may be your best bet - racks slide onto a rail -
Doesn’t interfere with the tonneau cover and racks are completely removable when not in use

I would second the Thule TrackRack. However, in my setup, the cover won’t fold up to the back window as the panels are too wide at that point to fit between the front of the rack. ( 6.5 foot box ) Otherwise a great system.

yep - has to be a hard roller like the bak revolver or similar - I can’t claim full credit tho someone else on here put me onto the set up - definitely my next purchase once the truck gets here; going to be a big help for scouting trips and eventually going to get a rack-top tent for it.
