I've got a 2023 F150 Powerboost that has had many of the charging issues discussed on the forum. I recently got a message on Ford app to have battery checked as it may need replacement. So I went to the dealer to see what they would say, thinking I would likely be buying a new H7 AGM replacement battery from NAPA or Autozone.

The dealer said my main battery was fine but the auxiliary battery was kaput. They are replacing it under warranty so I'll take it. But I'm wondering if now is the a good time to replace the main battery as well? I had assumed that it was an H6 12V FoMoCo battery, but when I looked closer, it is a BAGM-94RH7-800. I've got 16,000 miles on the truck, it's been in service for almost 2 years.

Thoughts?

Valve regulated (AGM) batteries have a life of ~ 3 to 5 years. I would tell you to pull the main battery fully charge it up on a battery charger and then take it to Napa and have them do a load test. But if you’re gonna take the time to pull the darn battery in the first place, it’s no more work to stuff a new battery in there. In this particular case there’s a lot of parasitic load draws on these batteries when the vehicles are off and so for that reason, I’m not a big fan of load testing the main battery when it’s sitting in parallel with the auxiliary battery as well and a lot of load losses taking place while it’s sitting there. For that reason, I would pull it and have a load Test run on it. But with that said & because the vehicle has two years on the battery; my first choice would be to just pull the battery and replace it.

Some of the higher end models, like your Platnum, did get an upgraded battery with higher capacity, in your case an H7 whereas the lower end trims got the H6. In your powerboost, your max size is an H7. Batteries when hooked in parallel like your two batteries are (main 12V and Aux) tend to seek a middle equilibrium and can mess each other up if one is bad. If money isn’t tight, I’d get a new main one now too. But the advice above is sound as well.
