Dealer Systems are Down!

So fun times this morning! I go into my local
Ford dealer in NJ for a scheduled appt for an oil change and tire rotation on my 23 xlt f150 and the advisor lets me know he can’t look up any details because the ford service system is down due to a cyber attack that hit ford yesterday. Allegedly someone hacked ford and is holding their “CPK” or whatever it’s called hostage for roughly $80 million USD.

Oooof. Yeah I just heard the manager of the dealership here telling someone on the phone that there was a ransom of like 80 mil to restore full access

My dealer is affected as well - I feel for them.

That does sound easy, but it's not - there are so many systems and processes tied to the inner workings that it makes it near-impossible to pivot like that. It does expose a weakness that they should plan for in the future though.

Someone is getting fired, but I suspect they'll pay the ransom after a few days of losing money and being screamed at for poor security practices.

My advisor was keeping a word document on his phone and was gonna have to go back and enter it all later. I’d asked him while it was in for oil and tire rotation to get my driver door looked at bc the upper portion is not flush and needs adjusted from the factory but he said that he’d reach out once he could access the system to do any real warranty work
