I bought a bag of 10 copper crush washers on Amazon so when I install an oil drain valve, I won't have to use an aluminum crush washer. After watching a video about annealing them, I decided to check to see if my new ones were pre-annealed....they were not. I tried to bend one with my fingers and I could barely do it. So off I go with my little butane torch and a cup of water, hung 4 on a wire, heated them to red hot, and dropped them in the water. I fished one out and could easily bend it. Mission accomplished.

TLDR: Anneal your copper crush washers before using them.

I don't understand wanting crush washers to be softer. ??‍♂

I'm one of the weirdos that has changed oil many times on several toys and never changed a crush washer with no leaks. Well, I did change them once on a bike since some genius apparently used an impact on drain plugs. Still have pack of crush washers somewhere in toolbox.

So it can conform to the sealing surface better and use less pressure (torque) when tightening the oil drain plug or valve to achieve a good seal.....without the use of an impact ?
