In the slow march to perform a chrome delete on my truck, the next item in my crosshairs are the step rails... The cheap route would be to pull them, mask and paint with about 10 layers of black plasti-dip, or roll on bed liner. Not sure how durable this would be compared to regular epoxy paint like that used for Brake calipers.

Or.. I can swap them with OEM black ones off Fleabay for a couple hundred and sell the chrome ones (eventually) to recoup some of that cost.

Or.. Go after market. I do like the way this style looks,

However my wife has told ever so lovingly said no to them because of this..

So as to not irritate my wife more than I already do, what's the general opinion on painting vs just replacing with OEM or aftermarket?

How about covering the chrome with black gorilla tape?

Replace. Time effort and cost. Nothing beats factory finish.

I would PlastiDip them to see what it looks like first since there's not much cost or time involved. You could probably do it without taking them off. And if you don't like the way it looks, just peel it off, sell them and but black ones.

I agree but my concern is the step parts will get scuffed up quickly by stepping on it all the time. Rest of the boards would be ok.

The OEM steps have a very large plastic surface on them so only the leading edge and near the end caps are exposed. Areas that any use of the rails would rarely come into contact with. So I may just try masking off the plastic areas and hit them with 5-6 good coats of black plasti-dip.

If I don't like it or it fails to hold up OEM's are now down to 180 on Ebay..

Too bad you weren't local to me in Toronto. I have a pretty much new set of BAP side steps I yanked off my truck
