I'm shopping around for a camper shell and it seems the default paint is matching the paint on the truck.
Not really sold on that idea. To me a matching shell makes the truck look an afwul lot like an SUV. I was thinking maybe going with a black low sheen cap. My truck is Carbonized Gray.

Anyone do a contrasting color?

Also, is it normal to pay 100% up front? Is it because of the color match?

I always color match. Currently have a Leer in carbonized grey. Take a look at Smartcap. Typically, mismatched color caps are due to buying used. I am sure you can choose whatever color you like. If I had to choose another color, it would be black.
It is normal to pay up front when you order a new cap. Maybe some dealers would take a percentage down, but I always paid up front since it is a custom order.

Here is my ARE MX OTR Coated cap on my Carbonized Metallic. I think it looks pretty good. 50% down when I ordered it.

That's a nice-looking combo, but textured dark surfaces on a vehicle are my least favorite when it comes to keeping them looking good both daily and in the long run.

Personally, I prefer a color matched canopy but I see plenty of people driving around with contrasting colors.

I’m sure every dealer is different but I have never had to pay in full when ordering a canopy. I have ordered four canopies from three different dealers over the years and was only asked to put down a 25-30% deposit.

Zero down, Kurt’s Csps in Wayne, MI. Custom color???? I’ve had a few caps, always matched the color code of the truck, to me a custom color would be like Chartreuse or blaze orange. These guys are the best I’ve dealt with, this actually is my 2nd Leer for this truck. The first one had a leak at the drivers side window, he said screw it and sent it back for a complete new replacement, zero cost to me.

That is a legitimate concern.

The ARE warranty states the following “ The spray on protective coating material used to produce the Overland Series and OTR option has a limited lifetime warranty not to crack, bubble, or flake as well as a 3 year warranty not to abnormally fade or loose its luster.”

The maintenance section recommends using 303 Aerospace Protectant on the spray-on protective coating monthly to protect against fade.

Please understand, I'd have no concerns about the long-term integrity of that surface, I'm sure it is very robust. And I'd expect that insofar as fade, over the very long term it'll behave similar to the ~20 years old Line-X (and even the OE dark textured trim) on my 2005 F150 - slowly evolving to a uniform slightly lighter grey which I actually have no problem with (it 'wears' its age well, IMO).

Mainly it's the issue that any texture grabs and holds dust / dirt / etc so seems to require more frequent washing to look sharp day-in-day-out.

Again, yours is a nice-looking rig, IMO. (y)

After a couple of weeks, the Gray with White is growing on me. Kind of reminds me of the Broncos and Blazers from the 70's.

Thinking I'll leave it white for now.

Plus it's easy to spot in a parkng lot.
