Ready this thread again I'm getting the feeling the 'avarage' F-150 owner is quite a bit different than it was 30 years ago.

I really don't understand WHY our trucks need a update.. Should it not work great when it rolls out the plant? GPS sure.. Things change but a transmission? I just don't get it.
Drive a GM product with the same 10 speed, then you will understand. The GM calibration makes Ford's transmission tuning look like a bunch of blind monkeys work there. Amazing how the same transmission with two different companies tuning them, can be worlds apart

What exactly does the "update" do? Why are changes required? Is it just Ford in trying to fine tune shift points? If it works when it rolls out of the factory at a decent level is the goal to get better MPG's? I really want to understand what and why our trucks MUST get updated..
