No good. Given the reports of multiple people being found under the same SSNs on the initial DOGE audits of SSN info, they might be trying to make sure it's 'you'. There was something like ~2 million SSNs w/ more than one person assigned to them due to the illegals literally making one up and just running with it. The IRS gave no shits because they're in the business of collecting money and your identity being stolen is a YOU problem not a them problem.

The g00berment has been up to some real shenanigans over the past 40+ years and the chainsaw can't finish up fast enough. Imagine being told you can't get any info on who's been using your SSN because of THEIR privacy. They're a fucking crook, they should be in federal prison on fraud and identity theft charges sitting next to whatever bureaucrat that's been allowing it to happen.
They should be able to cross check previous years for same name, SSN, address, & bank info. But then again we know the g00berment isn't efficient. Just odd this issue happened this year. I'm going to tweak my W-4 a few times over the next 3-8 months to try to get the return closer to zero for next year as suggested by @Buyer2021

Back in my lower enlisted days with young children, my wife and I counted on that extra 5-8k every year.

Now that I'm retired from the Army and also a GS employee, my wife and I usually either pay in or get a refund of around $50 every year. She will file our taxes in the next week or so. We might hear about it by the time DOGE uncovers the rest of USAID's fraud, waste and abuse.

Lol refund. Those days are over.

Screwed this year again. Wife inherited some stuff and earned significant interest. Both dipping into the 6 figure range in wages before you count any of the rest. She has OT and night diff that comes and goes depending on schedule. This year she was out for 2 months for surgery which means her WAGE income went down significantly. But she had the inheritance interest income that bumped it back up to basically the same, except this was several grand with no withholding. My stuff is the same year to year, hers is not. Impossible to predict and fine tune. I plan the best I can every April for the next year but then life comes at us fast and I never think to further adjust while it's all going on.

Learned the hard way to not get a heart attack every April at least one of us is going to have to go to Single filing separate. She will START there, then both of us may have to add dollar amounts on top of the standard percentage.

Happy to report we got the bank notification of deposit just now for the return. However, the WMR site still shows it being processed. Maybe the same idiots run both the Ford custom order status site and the IRS refund status site. After almost two months of waiting, I'm going to attempt to avoid getting a refund again.

Wow, that's just bizarre!

I've managed to anticipate and tweak W4's to keep my filing in the range of +$500 (owed) / -$500 (refund) for many years. Just FYI, I've found this online calculator, which is usually available for the next tax year shortly after the IRS publishes the applicable brackets, standard deductions, etc., helpful in that forward-looking withholding-adjustment effort.

But in tax year 2023 I received an unexpected inheritance (death of my mom). The inheritance wasn't taxed but the interest I earned on it that year was (of course), I failed to adjust for that 'windfall', so ended up with an additional tax due of ~$1800. For that one-time event I was not hit with any penalty for under-withholding.

Good Luck!
I've used this IRS Estimator a few times over the last several weeks to reduce my withholding and am now on autopilot to owe ~500 next year versus getting a refund. I'll recheck it Q3. Thanks again for the suggestion. This is great! :)
