2009 Volvo S40 make second key

This is probably a longshot, but I am not finding much information and what I am finding is conflicting. Knowing we have some of the smartest people around on here I figured I would give it a shot.


My son just purchased a 2009 Volvo S 40 and it only came with one key. Is there any chance that anybody knows how to make a copy without going to the dealership? From the little I have found, I am also seeing that getting one from the dealership may not even be an option due to lack of stock.

The key looks something like this. I will post an actual picture once he gets back with it.

Good luck! I can only relate to my experience with getting keys for my 2012 RAM. Doubt you can make a "copy". The plastic is just to turn the ignition switch that functions like the push button today. The transmitter inside the FOB has to be present for the car to start and program specifically to your vehicle. In the case of my RAM, I lost one but when the dealer programmed the new one to the car's computer, the older one did not function anymore and would not reprogram. Had to get two new keys. I had some Volvos in your time period and anything involving computers had to be done by the dealer. Did you look at youtube for any clues? Sorry I do not have positive news for you.

Yea checked YouTube, Reddit, and some Volvo forums without much/any luck, just some possible options they would still be fairly expensive and may or may not work.
