Hello folks, I am thinking about running 0W-40 Pennzoil Ultra Platinum in my 2021 3.5L Ecoboost. Someone tell me why this is a good or bad idea. Thanks in advance! :)

Driving conditions:
- 50% short-trips and 50% trips longer than 20 minutes.
- Climate: 4 seasons, Minnesota
- 25% of time I am in stop/go traffic.

IMO it's not hot enough where you're at to justify moving to a 40wt. I get wanting the 0w component given how cold MN can get. There are a few, all be it rare, 0w30 oils around. You could try one of them. The only way to truly know if the change is working out for you is to do used oil analysis.

We ran 5w30 synthetic for years in vehicles in interior Alaska where its way colder than Minnesota and had no issues. I even did a test with multiple oils set outside in cups at -50F to see which ones poured best. I would not mess with zero w anything in these trucks , stick with a quality synthetic 5w30 and don’t look back.

Why disregard the viscosity recommendations in your owner's manual? Do you really think you're smarter than Ford on this subject?

0W-XX oils are not only for emissions. Getting that 0W means you're getting the best possible flow for the coldest temperatures. That means you're getting the best possible protection when cold. That being said there are some trade offs oil manufacturers make when they get that 0w rating. Namely the high side rating tends to be on the lower end of that rating.

Any oil created under CAFE standards tells me it’s emissions related. They claim the cold start benefit of zero W oils allows the engine to burn less fuel at start up. Then they try to sell you on the cold start lubrication, but if you get away from countries that all hell bent on emissions they don’t even recommend zero W oil. For example the 5.7 L tundra engine they tell you to run 0w20 oil anywhere in the US but in Mexico they recommend nothing under 5w30 And in many cases thicker than 5w30, same truck , same owners manual, reduced CAFE standards.

3.5 EB oil viscosity.webp
fords been compromised, they were letting us destroy our engines with 0w20 (my 2018 5.0) so they could meet mileage and CAFE standards, just to get some government credits. Its not engineers that post these, it's the governement wing of ford that sets the oil standard

2 oil changes per year. One covers winter, one covers summer.

Does this vehicle spend it's shut down time in an attached garage, or parked outside at home or the office? If outside during winters, I'd definitely go with the 0W oil during the winter months. In an attached garage, probably not.
