Most motors will last 250k miles with regular maintenance. In my area it’s the road salt used for ice and snow that destroys a vehicles body integrity quickly causing corrosion damage to the frame and body panels. Some vehicles don't make it much past 6 years here because of it.

it Would be very cool if they ditch the push rods and make some proper over head cam engines …

Buddy of mine at work has an '04 tahoe. That 5.3 that makes no sense has 430,000 miles on it. He's had it since it had about 150k on it. There's no sign a valve cover has ever been off it. He keeps religious maintenance records on it, down to when transfer case and axle oils have replaced. He has me change the oil (with synthetic) every 3000 miles. If I blindfolded anyone and started it up near them, I could tell them it has 20,000 miles on it and they would believe me. It's that smooth. No cylinder deactivation.

Some naturally aspirated and simple engines operate well below their design criteria and if you do the maintenance religiously they will last a long time. Look at the Ford Godzilla 7.3 pushrod engine. It only makes ~ 400 HP and less than 500 torque, has simple port fuel injection, and a simple cooling system like the old school pushrod motors from years ago so that motor never gets stressed anywhere near its limits. Simple, easy, strong, and reliable.

This is just rumor, nothing has been confirmed to us lowly peons. The site that first published that rumor is nothing but blog-spam so take it for what it's worth.

What we do know is some technologies like cooled EGR will be added. Training modules and such have been known about for a bit. With the efficiency gains GM is targeting who knows what the end product will be. Increasing displacement would be somewhat of a surprise though.

Like I said 99-07 were the best years for GM. Once they went to cylinder deactivation nothing but problems.

I also know someone that had a 2004 Chevy with the 5.3 and it had over 400,000 miles. Looking at it you wouldn’t have guessed it over 100,000. He was on his second transmission the way I remember but motor was still running strong. I was a Chevy guy before they started messing around with the cylinder deactivation. Nothing but trouble out of that forsure in the first years. If they could get everything figured out with them I might even give them another chance. I liked them just wasn’t as reliable as I wanted. But it seems everything these days has some sort of problem so I guess just have to pick what you want.

It appears that the famous Chevrolet 350 that was replaced in the 2000 timeframe by the 5.3 will be returning in a modernized LT platformed form with the 5.3 going the way of the dinosaurs. For engine gurus the real small block 350 CI did all ready return to production in 2020 for marine and industrial applications from GM. I say good riddance to the 5.3, I never understood the LS love especially in stock form. The bores are too small and they gave up a lot of torque from the small block Chevy platform. It’s nice to see GM moving to classic bore X stroke with the better torque delivery. The 6.2 is being replaced by a half ton aluminum version of the 6.6L V8, but my eyes are on the new 5.7L. A direct injected 5.7 all aluminum will be what the Hemi should have been.
GM doesn't make a single good half ton engine today, so I wont give it too much attention. The 6.6 is great, but not that powerful and Id imagine the half ton application would be detuned, so idk where this is really going.

They wouldn’t even have to detune the 6.6 the hp and torque are almost identical to the 6.2.

If is still using pushrods maybe GM went with some kind of rocker disable feature for the AFM on the new design it might be a lot more reliable then the current cam lifter design. A rocker design could be similar to the over head cam roller follower CD setup.

At this time if one wants a Chevy truck with the excellent Z71 package that includes the Eaton G80 locking rear differential, the choice is between a 3L diesel and the 5.3 gas engine. The 5.3 has been the most reliable gas V8 from GM if one bothers to check.

My company's last truck purchase was a Chevy Silverado with the 5.3 engine and after having had to drive the 2022 F-150 truck it is a exceedingly nice to have a truck that starts in the morning and does not need to have a charger put on the battery to recover from a SOC that is too low to start the engine. We replaced the F-150 truck battery 3 times in 3 years and it is only with Ford vehicles where that is a common situation.

The 5.3 is easily the worst fleet motor I've ever had to deal with. They burn a quart of oil per 12 hour shift, fill the cabin with burned oil smoke when idled and we've had multiple full engine replacements over 200,000 km on each of our Tahoe PPVs. Dealers all say it's a design issue and they can't be idled at all.

Let's hope this new motor is reliable. Good competition results in better trucks for all.
Must be nice, by the time our SSVs makes it to 200k, most also had their transfer case and transmission replaced.

That's not mentioning the rust.

Your 12V battery never got charged because of the weather forecast for rain. Let's be honest. 😁

Saw some AI slop video today that there have been leaks that the 5.0 is getting upsized to 5.8 liters in 2028 with “hybrid ready” architecture. AI slop, but a good idea.

It is very much confirmed a new aluminum Hemi is in the works, it is very much confirmed GM has the 6th gen V8 coming, both for a 2027 launch so….i would imagine Ford is going to do something with the coyote to respond for the 2028 gens launch. There have been no plans made to close the plant, so naturally the product is probably going to evolve again. Exciting times!

The big change to get the coyote to 5.8 is going to be the bore tooling. That would be a pretty major upfit, but you could reuse most of the engine architecture and just scale it up (bigger valves, bigger ports etc).
